As a part of our Trans-Siberian trip across Russia, my husband and I stayed for two nights at the Oktyabrskaya Hotel in Ekaterinburg. For us, the outstanding feature of the hotel, was the friendly and helpful attitude of the staff, the majority of whom spoke some English. The reception staff, the lady in the gift shop and the wonderfully attentive waitresses in the restaurant all went out of their way to help us. The meals in the restaurant were of a good standard and reasonably priced. The outstanding meal was a "business lunch " served in the late afternoon. It consisted of four courses- a salad, soup, main course and dessert - and it cost 200 roubles per person ($10 Australian) and was delicious. They also serve a good buffet breakfast. The rooms are fairly small but comfortable. The general appearance of the hotel is clean and neat and there is an ATM in the foyer. The only downside to the hotel is its location which is a little far from the centre of town. For us, this turned out not to be very relevant. Our main aim in visiting Ekaterinburg, was to visit historical sites, especially those associated with the deaths of Tsar Nicholas 11 and his family. To this end, , we were able to hire an outstanding English speaking guide and a driver from the Ekaterinburg Guide Centre. One word of warning, it is important to allow a great deal of time to travel anywhere in and around the city, as the traffic appears to be constantly gridlocked and the smallest journey takes ages.
