I was part of a tour guide and it was a bit cloudy day but fine. It was a nice walk up the temple and it was nice to see it. It was very relax place and it can be a part to clear your mind. There was a lot of people but everyone had a good view of it.

Ryoanji temple is known its zen style rock garden. It is located near Kinkakuji, Golden Pavilion. However, it is apparently not as popular or famous as Golden Pavill. That is blessing because you can enjoy relatively peaceful quiet moments watching and appreciating the rock garden, the temple itself, outside the large garden, and the pond. Believe me, the entire temple ground is beautiful! One of my favorite temples in Kyoko, along with Kiyomizu temple. I never get tired of visiting them (the 6 or 7 times in Kyoko this time).

We were there right at the opening at 8:30 a.m. only a couple dozens of visitors for the first 30 minutes or so. The rock garden was all to ourselves (plus 3 other people). When we strolled the outside garden and along the pond, literally, we were alone.

This temple is amazing. The interior of the large temple provides so much history of what it was like to be back then (you can visit each of so many rooms). I highly recommend this place.

Although it rained on us the visit is well worth your time. The gardens and history are truly impressive.

The rock garden itself is a little underwhelming, though still pretty, but the temple grounds are beautiful. I loved all the lily pads and walking around the water.

This fascinating temple impressed us with it's gorgeous lily pond and the tranquility of it's Zen garden with 15 rocks on fine swept pebbles where people can pause to contemplate and meditate. It is said that if you can see all 15 rocks at once then you have attained true enlightenment. Unfortunately I did not succeed in achieving enlightenment.
