We had high expectations based on other TA reviews. Finding this hotel was difficult because our taxi driver did not understand the map printed out from the Mume website. He was more intent on discussing Mel Gibson because we are from Australia. We were dropped off at the nearest train station and found our way from there. It is a cute hotel in a good location but our room was so oppressive. It was on the top floor overlooking the street with black walls and ceilings. Whilst every concievable comfort had been thought of there were no horizontal surfaces left of any size for us to put any of our things on in the room or the bathroom. Apart from the voluptuous bed all the other furniture was either decorative or uncomfortable. The dining room/lounge/bar has a wonderful outlook over a canal but it is all very formal, the furniture is not for lounging in after a day of sightseeing. The happy hour is a nice touch and breakfast was nicely presented with quality ingredients. But we found the service completely over the top - obsequious. We only stayed one night and were glad to leave the next day.

It has all been said before. The hotel has a tiny frontage but opens up into a beautiful, airy space which feels more like a tastefully appointed upmarket home than a hotel. Hisako and her staff are all charming and helpful beyond words. The restaurants that were recommended were all absolutely fabulous; three nights and three of the best meals we've ever had anywhere ever! The hotel is in easy walking distance of the main city and even closer to the traditional and wonderful dining experiences to be had in the Gion district. The free bar (yes, FREE bar) that Mume hosts every evening between 5pm and 7pm is a real bonus and born of the genuine hospitality that the place offers. My only niggle was there was no space in the bathroom to put anything, despite there being room for shelving or a storage unit. Breakfast consists of soup (yummy) hard boiled egg, fruit salad, yoghurt, a range of breads and juice. There is free wi-fi and all the other little bits you expect from a top hotel but not necesssarily from a privately owned small (7 rooms) establishment. It was delightful and I would not look at staying anywhere else in Kyoto.

Room Tip: There are only 7. Look on the website and see which decor appeals. Ours was Butterfly at the front o...

Spent three nights there. We stayed on the third floor in a room called Wind. The decor might not appeal
to everyone...it's more Chinese than Japanese. So it's really a matter of taste. But overall, the room was clean and well appointed with even an air purifier included. What stood out at this hotel was the service staff. They really demonstrated their willingness to go the extra mile when we wanted to buy something badly. They joined the hunt by calling the store in downtown Kyoto daily to see if stocks had come in. They even called a branch of the store in Nagoya (our next destination) to see if they had stock of what we wanted. Location wise, this hotel sits near the old district of Gion and is walking distance from the main shopping belt in Kyoto, including Nishiki market, so no complaints. The downside, other than the decor, which may not be to everyone's taste, is that there's no room service and the hotel restaurant only opens for breakfast, so you have to eat out or buy back for all other meals. Overall, a good hotel with dedicated and helpful staff. We would recommend it despite slight inconveniences.

We stayed in this hotel for 3 nights at the end of April 2011. After reading the reviews we had high expectations and whilst I don't necessarily disagree with other review we found the service to be a bit overbearing and intrusive.

The happy hour was great, location good and the room was clean and well equipped (although the motion sensor on the toilet could cause a fright in the middle of the night).

We were happy to discuss our plans with staff but found their desire to recommend places overbearing. We're usually keen to take recommendations, but it is also enjoyable to stumble upon places yourself. We felt that they were recommended the same places to all their guest and that these were screened as 'safe for tourists'. Saying that, none of the restaurants we were recommended we're less than good, just nothing exciting and all a bit 'safe'.

Also, we didn't like all the staff gathering around the lift door and bowing as it closed. I guess this is a great honour in Japan and the height of politeness, but to 2 young Londoners it just felt a bit uncomfortable.

I'm not keen to be the only person posting a less than glowing review of Mume. I can imagine it is the perfect hotel for many guest, but we felt service was a bit too intrusive.

Everything said below is true - this is a great hotel in the centre of historical Kyoto.

The position is excellent, within easy walking distance of loads of the best temples to visit, and the interesting cobbled streets of Gion for traditional restaurants etc. They are happy to make (excellent) recommendation for dinner and to assist with travel plans.

In fact, it is quite obvious that the lovely ladies who run the place love nothing more than being helpful and making your stay with tham as wonderful as possible.

The breakfast is truly excellent, particularly the freshly baked breads and homemade preserves. The happy hour is a nice touch in a country where drinks are rather expensive.

Our room was the smallest category but (particularly by Japanese standards) was in no way pokey - it was quite spacious, beautifully decorated, and it had teh best toilet we saw in all our time in Japan (this is noteworthy - you will understand after a little time in Japan).

Not terribly cheap but actually far better than places around the world where I have spent a lot more for a night's accommodation. Thoroughly, thoroughly recommended.

It is difficult to properly sing the praises of Hotel Mume. All the positive things that have been said here before are accurate. Based on the reviews on this site, we booked this hotel for our stay in Kyoto 6 months in advance, before we even had our airfare. I didn't want to let the opportunity to stay here pass us by and I am certainly glad I didn't. We found Kyoto to be one of the most welcoming and friendly places we have ever visited and Hotel Mume was the epitome of that hospitality. From the moment we arrived, we felt like we were more than guests...we felt like family. While all the tangible amenities and services were as great as everyone has described, it was the intangible feeling of the staff truly caring about the quality of our stay and entire trip that made this the best hotel we have had the pleasure to enjoy.

Room Tip: Even though small, the Moon room was cozy and comfortable

This was our second visit to Japan, but our first time in Kyoto. Trying to find those special little hotels in foreign countries can quite often be difficult, and so we turned to TripAdvisor for guidance and Hotel Mume is the currently #1 hotel in Kyoto. A little further research and enquiry direct with the hotel and we booked three nights for our stay.

The hotel is a short taxi ride from central Kyoto station (approximaely 1,000 – 1,200 Yen). We were provided with a sheet to print out to give to our taxi driver for directions to the hotel. Located on Antiques Street (a phrase most Taxi drives are aware of it seems) in the Gion area, it is very unassuming – a lovely small hotel with a bright red door. The streets surrounding the hotel are amazing, with so many traditional style Japanese buildings home to restaurants and bars. Very romantic place to walk around in the evening.

Right from the moment they opened the door to welcome us in to when they waved us off in our Taxi when we checked out we couldn't have found a more welcoming, friendly, or helpful hotel to stay at in Kyoto, Japan or probably the world!

There are only seven rooms in the hotel, we were honoured with an upgrade from the Moon room we had booked to their largest Butterfly room. And what a room that is – seating area, large flat screen TV, complimentary WiFi, a laptop on the room if you needed one to use to access the Internet, a balcony, a large rolltop bath with views out into the city, a seperate raindrop shower, and the ultimate in Japanese toilets (heated seat, washing, drying, motorised lid).

The hotel staff have very extensive knowledge of the Kyoto area, providing us with sevaral maps and suggestions of temples and sights to visit. The ones we weren't aware of or weren't planning on visiting were by far some of the most stunning sights we saw! The recommendations for gardens were some of the most beautiful spaces I have had the honour to walk around.

All the staff in the hotel spoke perfect English, and in the evenings were more then willing to suggest restaurants, make enquiries about reservations and check places had English menu's. If you do stay at Hotel Mume I would highly recommend you ask their advice on where to eat and visit.

Breakfast each morning consists of a boiled egg, bowl of fresh homemade soup, mixed fresh fruit with a bowl natural yogurt, a selection of bread and pastries, freshly pressed fruit juice and coffee or tea as you wish. The soup, fruit selection and breads change daily. The attention to detail is so good at Hotel Mume the first morning neither of us had the bannana that morning and the following two days we didn't have any bannana in the fruit selection.

Every evening between 5:00pm and 7:00pm the hotel Bar (or Saloon as often referred to in Japan) hosts a Happy Hour. You are are invited to enjoy complimentary drinks, from their wide variety of liquors and whiskeys, wine, beer or soft drinks. They also have an amazing selection of nibbles – each time our dishes were refilled they seemed to be some new! And this is a great opportunity to relax from a day's sightseeing, and talk about where to go that evening or the following day.

The love and pride all the staff have for their hotel and city cannot be understated. Next time we won't look for another hotel, we will be returning to Hotel Mume.
