This was our first kaiseki experience. We had 8 course lunch which was ¥ 10000 each. The food and service were excellent. The only downside was we went at 1:30 for lunch on a Tuesday and we were the only ones in the restaurant. Good if you like privacy but would have preferred a few more customers for some ambiance.

Visited this restaurant on the day before we left Kyoto. Had the basic meal in the Japanese style room.. the dinner was delicious and very filling, by the time of the third course we were both full. It was nice that they explained every course and also gave instructions on how to eat it, which was helpful because it was our first time in Kyoto and the first kaiseki dinner. The staff were very courteous and helpful. They can converse in English which is a plus for us. Would highly recommend this restaurant..

We had recommendation from a friend and tried this traditional restaurant in April.

It is located on a quiet street off Nishiki market. When you walked in, you would know that it was a house with history. The Japanese zen feeling is relaxing.

We had chosen to eat in a Japanese-styled private room. It was good-sized and overlooking a small Japanese garden. We were served by an English speaking lady and Mr Ukai Junior who speaks fluent English. It is a real delight as we could then understand the ingredients of each dish better.

Food was served in a steady flow according to their traditional order. We were served in the Spring time bowls and plates (with cherry blossom patterns). They were used only in sakura seasons.

I forget how many courses were served but I enjoyed it throughout the meal.

Strongly recommend this restaurant.

I choose Kinmata over other choices because this kaiseki restaurant is easy to reach and have been serving since over 200 years ago.
Services are excellent, they have staff able to speak fluent English.
There are two option of dining which is restaurant area dining and tatami area dining.
The later needs reservation before as they are always full booked.
Prices and menus differ in lunch and dinner time.
I came at dinner time, the package price at the day i came (21 May 2016) starting from ¥11.000++,¥13.000++ and ¥15.000++. I choosed the ¥13.000 for 2 persons. Given 9 set of amazingly delicious and nicely crafted foods. We ordered 2 small pot of sake which cost us 1000++ per pot.
In total i have to pay around 33.000 yen for (13.000x2 and 1000x2)
Overall this is a must try Japanese fine dining experience when you are in Kyoto
