Owner description: Built in 1482 by the shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa, this Zen temple was supposed to have been finished in a coat of silver. Although this step never occurred, the temple is still known by the name Silver Pavilion.

Serene and beautiful set in the wonderful green gardens of Ginkaku-ji.Must be one of the most beautiful places to visit in Japan.

I visited this temple of "wabi-sabi" aestheticism back in 1983 and 1992, when I was too young to appreciate its inherent beauty. The third time round, I finally appreciated the view from the small (probably man-made) hill opposite the small dark brown wooden pavilion with the moss garden and the silvery grey sand garden in between.

The name of this temple is rather misleading (it's not the silver version of its golden crosstown counterpart). But what the temple lacks in sparkle, the garden makes up for through meticulous maintenance. We even saw a staff-member sweeping the moss beside the path. Like most in Kyoto, Spring or Autum would be the best times to visit.

The Silver Pavilion is also simply wonderful! Near the entrance is a sculpted, and raked rock garden. After walking through most of the gardens, The Silver Pavilion is located closer to the exit. If you can see during cherry blossom season it is worth it!
