Owner description: Built in 1482 by the shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa, this Zen temple was supposed to have been finished in a coat of silver. Although this step never occurred, the temple is still known by the name Silver Pavilion.

Compared to some of the other temples we visited this one wasn’t the most interesting but it had a nice garden. If you have a short stay I would skip it, but it’s a nice visit if you have more than a few days in Kyoto.

Stopped here after doing the Philosopher's Path and the entry fee is well worth it to see the gardens.

Visited here on a day when the heavens opened and we got well and truly drenched, but what a wonderful Temple and ajoining gardens. There is definatley an air of tranquility about the place and the gardens are immaculately tended.
Not too far from the Philosophers Walk which we also walked, but unfortunately the weather was awful.

Only rated this 4* as I gave the Golden temple a 5*... the temple itself not as eye-catching due to the unfinished (not actually silver) exterior of the temple. The gardens are very nice in the Zen style, with nice ponds and the temple as a backdrop. Unfortunately not so Zen due to the crowds walking around... a good start or end to the Philosopher's Path which takes in a few other temples in the area.

Beautiful gardens round this Temple, which is close to the Philosophers Walk. It also has a wonderful dry garden.
