Best to go early... As this is Sakura season. We were there before the gates opened and glad we did.. Was super crowded but definitely worth going... Beautiful!!

The temple is amazing but is overrun by tourists. We arrived at 10 and the jostling didn't let us really enjoy the temple

1 hour in total required. Get there at 9am when it opens to avoid the crowds. 30 minute bus ride from Sanjo Station in Gion.

Swamped with tourists so be an early bird and visit early to avoid the mass of people visiting the golden temple. It is a great experience otherwise and the temple is... shiny!!

We were actually a bit disappointed with this site.
It is advertised as probably the best tourist site in Kyoto, but I would not rave about it.
There were dozens of buses in the car park and a steady stream of visitors, but everyone kept moving and it was easy to get positions for good photos. It is a one way walk around the temple and through the surrounding garden and past the souvenir shops.
You don't go through the temple, or even get right up close to it.
It is quite an unusual building, but I would not call it stunning. You don't need to linger long here.
We didn't actually find what we were expecting in Kyoto - thought the architecture would be a lot more interesting.
