This place is located within Ryoan-ji. We found this as we walked pass it and it has a long entrance to the garden. We found the same restaurant in TripAdvisor but it was named Seigeiinn which is the same as 西源院. Location was off so I suggested the new location for easier finding. A group of Chinese tourist followed us behind the entrance path and was loudly taking photos while others enjoying the quiet garden. I hope there's Chinese signs in the future for those who doesn't understand Japanese or English. The food was delicious and refreshing! We came at a good time since it was raining outside. What's better than enjoying a nice cup of hot tea and lunch while looking out the nicely maintained hidden garden.

This cozy, traditional restaurant is a must visit when you visit Ryoan-ji. You can experience their great tofu while enjoying the sights of their beautiful inner garden. The staff is also very friendly!

Nice little gem hidden in the Zen garden from Ryoanji temple in Kyoto.
You will discover there at least 4 ways to prepare Tofu. Be prepared :-)

It started rain when we arrived at Ryoanji Temple which is very famous as Zen temple in Kyoto.

Sitting on the Corridor and watching the rock garden, I could feel the universe of infinity.
Get rid of all human desires and passions that disturb my mind and make my mind empty, and face with the rocks and the mosses.
Can feel peace in mind and joy of living...
The rock garden tells me the world I live can be changed when I change my thought.

All things have both sides of Bright and Dark, Front and Back...
Therefore, it is important for us to try to see the Bright side...
The rock garden in Ryoanji Temple tells me such thing...

We got feeling that our mind was purified, and then we directed to Seigenin...

Seigenin is "Tacchu" (sub-temple on the site of the main temple) of Ryoanji Temple and located quietly near Kyoyo Pond.

In the gate, the Noren on which it is written as "◯天下一" is hanging from the ceiling.
The circle "◯" which does not have any corner is the symbol of "Infinity" and it indicated hope of the Peace in the world.

Get through the gate and move forward a little, we could see the entrance of Seigenin.
We took off our shoes at the entrance and get on the Tatami room.

There are many tables with Hibachi in center in the big Tatami room.
Hibachi is a small Japanese charcoal heating appliance somewhat resembling a brazier.

We could watch the garden and make our mind peaceful.
We felt we came to Zen Temple when we heard the rhythmical sound from Iiodoshi, Water-filled bamboo tube which clacks against a stone when emptied

We have booked ShojinRyori, vegetarian cuisine originally derived from the dietry restrictions of Buddhist monks, in advance, the Seven Herb Yudofu (boiled tofu) in a big earthenware pot was delivered to our table just soon after we sat on the Tatami mat. It was put on the portable clay cooking stove called "Shichirin".

Soon the low dining table of seven species prime vegetarian food; "ShojinRyori" was coming carried.
As the table of stepladder is narrow, low dining table of vegetarian food was set aside. Somehow, it seems to be the thing to eat vegetarian food in the form of irregular.
While I am thinking "perhaps, this seems to be the way of the human diet in the old days," I started to eat it quietly.

The Tofu in the big earthenware was so-called "Momen Tofu (firm tofu)" , but was like a silky fineness of texture tofu called "Kinu Tofu".
When I said "It is delicious tofu!", the waitress told me that they purchases it from the same place of the Nanzenji tofu which is the most famous tofu in Kyoto.

Seven Herbs over the tofu seems to represent the four seasons of beauty in Kyoto, but for me who have no knowledge about it, it was not good enough to understand it well.
It was impressive that unexpectedly sauce for the tofu was delicious.

The boiled tofu is kelp soup, dipping sauce, how it is a bonito soup stock, I was able to have the tofu very delicious.

Vegetables with dressing, sesame tofu, vegetable side dish, and pickles, vegetarian food was rice, but if anything, this place was bland.
In anticipation, I thought that was more bland taste, but I was able to be seasoning like Kyoto, and deliciously.
However, in the one of the gourmet taste, it just boiled tofu might be all right.

It was a valuable experience at only a Zen temple in Kyoto, having meals that can not be experience, overlooking the garden, listening to the root of the sound of deer threatened and getting vegetarian food with tofu!
