This place would be spectacular in the late fall with red foliage along the sides of the stream running between areas of the temple. Easily reached by train on the nara line and go to Fushimi Inari Temple nearby.

Tofukuji has many gardens, great variety, wonderful dry landscape garden, great buildings, unusual checkerboard garden at the Hojo. Especially worthwhile for its gardens, and the maples are lovely in November. Easy access.

Some of the nicest gardens I've seen in Japan. I'm here at the end of Autumn so the colours aren't quite as spectacular, but some are still lingering. Still got some great photos.

The Sanmon gate was very impressive! Have never seen anything like it before. Definitely a must do while in Kyoto.

Tofukuji had the best autumn foliage in November, in my opinion. I went to numerous places but this one tops my list as the koyo is all over and there was a symphony of colours! It looked very crowded at the entrance to the bridge but that's because everyone was trying to take photos at the first sight of the koyo. There are more scenic places within and it was not that crowded after you get past the first section of the bridge. Do try the yaki-mochi and other snacks they sell outside the temple. These were delicious!

This is a place to see the fall colors. It was so packed you could hardly move to see anything at all.
