No major complaint about this classy, friendly hotel.
The service is excellent. The location is not bad although not very central. It is a 10 min walk to the Shichijo Kyohan Line underground station; only 10 min by taxy to Kyoto Station.
There are almost no restaurants around (I didn't try the restaurants inside the hotel, but I wasn't inspired by them at all) so I would say that other hotels are better located. However, for the price you pay, the Hyatt experience is very good.
The room is not huge, but cozy and very clean and new. The bathroom is amazing. The breakfast is nice, but like Internet, not cheap.. The lobby is very dark, you can hardly read/use the computer during the evening; it looks very nice though.
Recommended for Sanjusangendo, and other attractions close to Kyoto Station.

We stayed 3 nites @ Kyoto Hyatt during our Fall color viewing trip. We are Hyatt core patrons. We arrived with loads of expecations, we left with heaps of disappointment.

Location: a quiet refuge in a quaint old part of Kyoto. Away from shopping but with a bus stop right outside the hotel. The Kyoto bus system is marvellous that takes or connect you to all major attractions. We like the location better than the Westin or the Granvia right above the hustle and bustle.

Service: The service was disappointing that lacks the personal touch.

Lobby: it is small, you can ask to use their laptop for free wireless internet access. If you sit down with your own laptop, you can have one hour free access.
It is Yen1650 per 24hr for internet access in the room.

Concierge- exemplary excellent. The concierge staff has rich knowledge of the season, and can provide you with detailed info , transport on the red leaf viewing, sightseeing and answer all my questions, incl. silly and clueless ones. PERFECT!!

Restaurants - the breakfast is ok, however, at busy season, the line can be long for the coffee shop is kind of small. The Japanese restaurant offers fine Japanese cuisine. We were impressed. If the hotel can create a better corner with a nice view of the bamboo garden or rock garden as coffee/tea lounge offers nice cakes would be perfect. The coffee shop or so called Grill lacks ambiance or character.

Room Deco - the hotel pics on the site are deceiving. The hotel and the rooms are well - lit not dim and dark. Room is definitely on the small side given Kyoto land price is not as high as in Tokyo.
Neutral tone wood and light color decor with a hint of Japanese touch.
Some might find it cold-looking at winter time. Amenities is standard. I do wish the Hyatt can use a higher line of bath amenities.

We didn't experience the same personal and warm touch like other Hyatt in Japan. something is missing there.
My husband isn't a picky traveller like me, but this is only the second Hyatt in the world he is disappointed at.

The service and facilities do not commensurate with the room rate. Hyatt Kyoto can do better. Hope the management read the review.

We stayed at the Grand Hyatt Kyoto for 3 nights last February. The hotel is very well organized you can have a complimentary transfer if you make a request .Attention it's one way complimentary!

The rooms are spacious and extremely clean with beautiful minimal design. Also enjoy a coctail at the bar.Plus you can use a laptop for free at the lobby for as long as you like. My friend and I work in the travel industry and by far this hotel was one of the best we ever stayed in!

Everyone in Japan was extremely friendly and accommodating, but the staff at the Hyatt in Kyoto really went out of their way to make our trip enjoyable. We stayed for three nights in early December on a trip around Japan, and this was our favorite hotel. The rooms were clean and well-appointed, the restaurants and Touzan bar were excellent, and the location was convenient to all the sights. A number of people have written about the bus routes close by, but we ended up walking everywhere or catching a cab. Cabs in Kyoto were not expensive and everything is fairly close, so spending $7-10 US on occasional cab rides was not a big deal.

The staff was super-friendly and made us feel right at home. The concierge made dinner reservations for us at Yoshikawa, a famous tempura restaurant that is hard to get into, and we had one of our best meals in Japan there. I would highly recommend this hotel--especially to anyone who has spent alot of time in Tokyo or Osaka and is looking for a more laid-back, relaxing experience.

My wife and I stayed for five nights in early December 2008, for a sightseeing trip. We chose this hotel due to the great reviews on TA.

The hotel is a low-rise building on the southern edge of Kyoto, it is about 15 mins walk to Kyoto station, but buses 100 and 206 stop right outside - these can take you to the station or to most of the sights in Higashiyama area. A cab costs about 800 yen to the station, 1000 to downtown 'Sanjo-dori'.

We were checked in without fuss, with a very warm welcome.
The lobby and public areas are very tastefully decorated, I am sure you will have seen some shots of the lobby area - it's a bit different !
There were lots of weddings and conferences going on in the public rooms - it seems to be a popular choice among the locals.

Our room was very nice, bathroom was impressive, a separate WC, and the bedroom was of a good size. We thought the wardrobes were a bit small, but would not be a problem if you were staying for a couple of days.

We went to the Touzan bar and restaurant on our first night, as we were too tired to explore outside the hotel. Both were exemplary in food quality and service, however unless you are very rich I would suggest that you might be a little surprised at the extremely high prices !! I guess it was worse for us coming from the UK as the exchange rate is extremely poor - Japan is 50% more expensive for us compared to this time last year !
That said, if you are prepared to flash the cash, you will be rewarded with an excellent meal and drinks.

We had breakfast in the garden restaurant every day - it was a very nice buffet with a wide range of quality food. If you can get a rate inclusive of breakfast, I suggest you take it, as again the cost is very high, but certainly no complaints !

Throughout our stay the reception staff and concierge were very helpful - they booked restaurants for us, and even delivered tickets for the shinkansen. Housekeeping was great too - everything was spotless.

If I were to return to Kyoto, I would not hesitate to stay at this lovely hotel - the best Hyatt I have stayed at.

We just returned from a 3 night stay at the Hyatt Kyoto and had to write an immmediate review. First off this Hotel is top notch in every way. Facilities, Service, Location, etc.
Service was top notch the minute we pulled in. The front desk staff was friendly and knowledgeable and made check in a breeze. The concierge desk was friendly, knowledgeable and went out of their way to help plan a memorable day in one of the most interesting cities in the world. We had drinks in the hotel Bar one evening and spoke at length with the manager, Ken, and was impressed with his customer service and professionalism. Just a great staff experience.
The rooms were the largest we have stayed in while in Japan and can best be described as Modern Japanese. Every aspect of the room was impeccable: the decoration, the cleanliness, everything. The area over the bed was made of Kimono material, a nice touch. We were also lucky to have a view of the garden below (beautiful!)
I need to address one review I read here that kind of bashed the hotel for being 'too americanized'. Please be aware before booking that this is an AMERICAN hotel chain and you are not staying in a Japanese hotel. If you want a Western hotel with a Japanese twist; look no further. If you want strictly Japanese, Kyoto is full of wonderful Ryokan. For my money Hyatt is a great mix of East meets West and I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.

We arrived here after staying at The Peninsula in Tokyo for a week. Although the Hyatt is no match for The Peninsula, there is no hotel of that class in Kyoto and having seen the Westin, the Hyatt is for sure the best option in Kyoto. The rooms were not as small as we feared and the Touzan Bar is excellent and beautifully designed.

What really made our stay memorable is their excellent concierge. She advised us with tremendous enthousiasm and professionalism. Her restaurant recommendations were superb and this was of great value to us. She made great efforts to find us pre-dinner bars (not easy in Kyoto!) near the restaurants she booked for us, even slipping letters under our door at night. Unfortunately, she had a day off when we left and we could not thank her personally.
