We just returned from a nice stay at the Hyatt Regency Kyoto. To start off I'd like to say how nice the property is, with a Zen garden and just a clean design. With that said, our stay did not exactly start off with the best first impression. We foolishly decided to walk from Kyoto Station upon our arrival (took about 20 minutes), which is not the most scenic route...so I would avoid that. A cab ride is a short 5 minutes from Kyoto Station and will run about 600-700 yen. We didn't realize, but the Hyatt provides a free cab ride from Kyoto Station to the hotel on the day of your check in. Just check the hotel's website for details.

Initially we were given a room that was in the annex part of the hotel...and after walking our way to the hotel we really didn't feel like walking so far just to reach our room everyday. We asked about an upgrade since we are World of Hyatt members and were able to be upgraded to a closer and larger room. The rooms are clean, water pressure was great, bathroom/shower was so beautiful we want to do the same in our home one day.

The best part of the hotel is their concierge team. While unpacking I realized I no longer had my JR Rail Pass! We called the front desk to see if we had left it in the previous room but they could not find it. Completely upset after turning all my bags, pockets inside out with no success...we decided to head to dinner and ask the concierge for some assistance. Andrew and Yoshie (I think?) were so helpful! They asked all the details and called the JR station to ask if anyone turned my pass in. No one had at that time but they did not give up. They said they would call again when the subway station and the police station located there opens the next day. I honestly didn't think I would find the pass again so it was such a surprise when I received an email the next day from the concierge team that someone had turned my pass into the police! They really went above and beyond and I am truly grateful. Thank you.

One more thing, the hotel is located within walking distance from some temples and Kiyomizuera...but there's not much else around. If you'd prefer being able to walk out your hotel and find restaurants, then staying around Kyoto station would be more ideal. We had a good time though at the Hyatt Regency and would likely return, with the understanding that we will need to take a cab downtown or to Kyoto Station.

The hotel is impressively set in a large garden in the center of downtown. Within waling distance of temples and shopping. Be sure to sign up for a room with breakfast. Fill up and you are good for sightseeing the entire day. Room service was mediocre and the beds were a bit hard.

Room Tip: Garden view room is best.

Stayed for a week so had enough time to reflect and to distinguish between a bad day and an overall notion. The only thing good about this place are the people who greet you at the door, the bell boys and the concierge, absolutely brilliant. The rest of the staff especially those in the main restaurant in the lobby and the Italian upstairs rolled their eyes before a guest even said hello every time with no fail. Absolutely shocking for a Hyatt. Reception equally bad. Hotel is in the middle of nowhere, toilets have a bad smell, lobby is small with barely any sitting area, no swimming pool, weak pillows. I could go on forever. The only thing 5 star about this place is the room rates and the prices in the restaurants which are always in a rush to close. Last order is 21:30!!! Bizarre, and this applies to other hotels too. At which day and age is the last order so early especially in a city buzzing with tourists? Finally we got scammed twice by taxi drivers which we picked up from the hotel entrance which the hotel claims no liability over even though they queue up on the premisses. Beware of the change they give you as it will be much less than its supposed to and make sure how much the ride will cost roughly as they may take you a long way round to clock up the fare.

The premise has a cul de sac location but its in the middle of all the attraction. We took the Train from Osaka Front directly to Kyoto, & the hotel is just a 10 min Cab ride away, ig is very near to Gion, Shijo-dori and other attractions. The hotel has a contemporary architecture & decor with traditional Japanese design elements, Staff are fantastic & very attentive to details.

Room Tip: The premise is in a cul de sac, so all rooms are quite good
