I stayed at Ryokan Shimizu with a friend for 6 days. I strongly recommend this Ryokan - the place is very nice, close to the station, perfectly cleaned, with a very friendly and warm atmosphere and beautiful people to take care of you. I hope to come back!

Wow, what an experience! My partner and I stayed here in June/July 2013 and it was one of the highlights of our Japan trip. Only a 10-15 minute walk from Kyoto Station (for us it took around an hour since we got terribly lost in the gorgeous, quaint streets of Kyoto, but eventually found our Ryokan after some help from lovely locals!) fall into the bliss and tranquility of this beautiful inn. Built entirely from wood, it smells amazing and I slept like a log on the traditional futons on the tatami mat. After spending a week walking non-stop around Tokyo, the hot bath was incredibly inviting for our aching bones. Make sure you take part in the traditional activities that occur around 6pm every night - we did the calligraphy, and we made friends with people all over the world! If you want to splurge a little, I highly recommend the traditional breakfast (1000-2000 yen I believe). Also, rent bicycles (I think 700 yen for 24 hours) and explore what Kyoto has to offer! We stumbled upon some amazing temples and discovered the beauty of Gion at night. Make sure you take notice of where you can and can't park your bikes because bike inspectors WILL get you in trouble! Being so close to Kyoto station, it was so easy to get anywhere. I absolutely recommend and will be staying here again because of the impeccable service, location, price and cleanliness.

Nice and clean ryokan located near Kyoto transport main station. Special thanks to their helpful and good English speaking staff including Ichi & Yoko. We rented bicycles from them for day trip. Quite fun. But you may need to check weather first as you can't ride when it rains.

Room Tip: Need to walk about 5-10 min from/to kyoto station. Rent a bicycle at about 750yen/day from them is a...

Truly one of our greatest Japan memories. Going back to Shimizu after a day out was like going home :) only in Japan! Wonderful clean, comfy rooms with everything you need, and delicious breakfasts. The greatest thing by far though about Shimizu is the staff, could not ask to meet nicer more helpful people. Special thanks to lovely Yoko, kazu and ichi for making our stay so memorable ( *_* )

It's a very friendly and cleany place in the center of Kyoto. The room is large and in japanese style with tatamis. The equipe of the Ryokan will help you and give information you need. The best place to stay in Kyoto.

We were very disappointed with this property.

The property's website gives the impression that it offers a traditional ryokan experience but that turned out not to be the case. The building is modern and ordinary, and is located on a narrow residential street quite close to Kyoto railway station. The interior has been made to resemble a traditional Japanese inn, with sliding paper doors and tatami mats, but the accommodation was extremely basic. The walls were thin and we could easily hear the conversations of the guests in the room next to ours.

With its young staff, internet corner and mementos left by guests from all over the world, the place feels more like a hostel than a proper Japanese inn. The price we paid for a triple room was extraordinarily high by Japanese standards, and we were expecting a great deal more for our money. The room rate did not even include a basic breakfast.

The location is very convenient for Kyoto station but extremely inconvenient for the city's sights, which are quite far away.

However, the staff are very helpful and speak excellent English.

A cold welcome tea during this warm weather was delightful, and the room was well agenced and really cosy for our stay. We spend a lot of good time with the employee, and will always remember the Tea Ceremony presentation, the chopstick tutorial as well as the other activities.
The Ryokan is really near to the main Kyoto Trainstation (5 min walk), in a small and quiet street.
A great experience for a low price!
