“Not a five-star experience”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 April 2012

My husband and I chose to stay in Osaka and take the train to Kyoto during the cherry blossom season as hotel prices in Kyoto were sky high. We were thrilled to get a great deal at the Westin Osaka since we have stayed at the Westin before and really enjoyed the experience.

Unfortunately, we quickly learned that this hotel is not up to Westin standards...

1. Hardly anything is included - you have to pay extra for the fitness center and the pool. Internet is also available at an extra charge. Only the shuttle to Osaka Station is free.

2. The rooms are decorated in stark contrast to the lobby. While the lobby is beautiful and luxurious, when we got to our room, I thought we were in a 3-star hotel. The sheets were rough. The bed was stiff with no extra padding. The carpet was old. The furniture looked like it was from the 1980's and the walls were completely bare. This really surprised me as I thought we would get a slightly more comfortable room.

3. When we checked in, I had accidentally booked our hotel room for only one person. In Japan, hotels charge by the person, not by the room. This was an honest mistake and, as a Starwood Preferred Guest member, I expected the staff might make an exception for us. They didn't, in fact, they were quite strict about the rules and we ended up having to pay an extra US$40 per night for a room that is not up to Westin standards. In addition, there were no non-smoking rooms left, so we had to take a smoking room.

I would NOT stay here again even if the rate is low. To me, it wasn't worth the hassle.

Room Tip: Make sure to ask for non-smoking when you reserve as these rooms go quickly!

The only saving grace for this hotel is it's friendly and helpful staff. Otherwise I found the property disappointing on all levels.

Rooms:
Whilst large and clean, the rooms can only be described as a blast from the past. Old wooden furniture, uncomfortable office chair, desk too high for the chair and no WIFI in the room unless one hires a router from the hotel.
No Westin Heavenly bed available unless booking Club rooms. Bathrooms are old and worn and are also not the Heavenly Baths usually offered in Westin hotels.
Even executive rooms are old and worn. They apparently have Heavenly Beds, though I did not stay in one. Everything else in the Club rooms is the same than in standard rooms (including the outdated furniture)

Public areas:
Outdated, Old fashioned and worn is the best way to describe the public areas and restaurants. Food offering in the breakfast restaurant are very limited and not very good.
Worst place is the Blue Bar where overpriced drinks are sold in a tired and very smokey ambiance. Staff in the bar barely speak English. I ordered a Draft Guinness and ended up being served from a small, lukewarm can. USD 15 plus a mandatory cover charge of USD 9 are outrageous for one drink, particularly when it's not what was offered on the menu. (served without explanations)

Note there is no WIFI available in the hotel's public areas.

Will I stay again.... hope not!

Room Tip: Executive Room for Heavenly bed or different hotel just to be sure

Thank you for the feedback regarding your stay at The Westin Osaka. We are very sorry to hear that you did not enjoy a comfortable stay. As you pointed out, the biggest challenge now for us is aging guestrooms. Almost 20years has passed since our hotel opened, and our facilities have become older. However, we guarantee that our associates offer you hospitality. Also guestrooms will be refurbished from this year for your enjoyment stay.

In regard to the Blue Bar, we are sorry we could not meet your expectations. The glass of "Draft Guinness" we offered was one of the official Guinness draft and we assure it is the same quality as poured from the barrel. However, we apologize that it was not cold enough, which is the primary importance for the taste of beer.
Also, the staff should have explained the cover charge beforehand or they could at least indicate the menu where explained it. We must apologize for making you feel it was not worth the price of a glass of beer with a cover charge at the Blue Bar.
We immediately reviewed our service standard and will do our best to provide better service to all our guests.

We hope you come and stay again.

A great hotel, the only minus is the location. I have really enjoyed my stays at the Westin in Osaka, the hotel is very nice, the staff are great and the price is right. The front desk staff is especially helpful. The rooms are large and very well appointed. Not to mention spotlessly clean. The restaurants are very good, and the breakfast buffet is great if you crave a real American meal to start the day. The fish pond off the lobby bar and restaurant is very relaxing.
The only thing I can think to list as a drawback is the location, most of the things that you want to do around the hotel are closer to the train station, which is a good 15 minute walk, and to get there you need to use an underpass that goes under the railroad tracks. I am sure it is very safe, but I would not to walk alone at night if I was woman. They have a shuttle bus that takes as long as the walk does, but it drops you off right in the heart of things.

Stayed in a Deluxe Room in October of 2011 for the second time. As is the case with just about every hotel in Japan, service is exemplary. The front desk and bell personnel are eager to please and super quick in tending to your every whim. The rooms are reasonably spacious and are spic & span. However, the Westin is starting to show its age - it's nothing like The Westin Tokyo... nothing about it screams "luxury." Furthermore, the location is quite inconvenient, unless you usually get around by taxi rather than via the subway.

Still, it's priced appropriately so there's not too much to complain about. Serviceable business hotel.

We stayed at this hotel for 4 nights and found that it meets the standars set out by Westin when it comes to class of service.

Restaurants were excellent and service staff even better.

But, this hotel is older and starting to show its age. My only opinion is that the rooms are nearing there end of life and should be refurbished soon to remain in line with what you would expect from a Westin hotel.

Probably the most professional staff of any hotel we stayed in our 5 weeks in Japan. English can be a problem, like in so many hotels in Japan, but there is always someone coming to the rescue. We stayed on the Executive floor and can only recommend it! Up there everyone speaks English, the service is great and the views are incredible. they must be the best in town (see photos). There is no fault we can find with this hotel - if there were one thing I would like to comment on, it is the temperature in the public areas. We were there in December and, although I prefer the cold to the heat, but it was downright cold to eat in the coffeeshop or wait for friends in the lobby. That is a first time in any hotel.
The location of the hotel is very good, just behind Umeda station. Walking to the station takes at most 10 minutes, but there are also frequent shuttle buses to and from Umeda.

Room Tip: the higher the better

Though located a good 15-20 min walk from Osaka Station, this hotel has much larger rooms than the Hilton which we normally stay at. The bus shuttle to the station runs every 15 mins to overcome any inconvenience of location.
The rooms were large (very large for Japanese standards) and we asked for a view of the Umeda Sky Building next door and got room #1201. As a bonus, the German xmas market is on each night in the open courtyard of this building so we were looking onto a huge lit xmas tree and fair each night.
Service was excellent and English standards fantastic so our stay was very smooth. The concierge team gave lots of helpful advice and checked up on places we had read about, saving us time and confusion.
The gym was good, though you have to pay for this facility in Japan, unlike most countries.
would stay here again. Very friendly and great rooms.
If you found this review helpful, please give it a helpful vote. Thanks!

Room Tip: ask for view of Umeda Sky Building
