“A bit of heaven. Stylish, charming and a great value!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 February 2012

The Antique Theatre is small, charming, and stylish boutique hotel with tastefully furnished rooms set on the steep hillside across the street from an antique Roman amphitheater.

There were eight of us staying here after a week-long Gulet trip on the Turquoise Coast. I’d stayed here before with my parents, and it was nice to be able to visit again with my girlfriends.

First, the gracious hotel. It caters to those who want to be off the beaten path, but close enough to the city center as to making walking possible (coming back…all uphill…may take some time). The 18 rooms are small and modestly appointed with a feel of serene elegance.

The beds can be on the FIRM side, the linens are good, and there is nice, original artwork and antique mirrors on the walls. Bathrooms are on the small side, but everything works—just not a lot of room to move around. All rooms have a balcony or terrace and the views to the pool and the imposing Castle of the Knights of St. John is just across the harbor.

They offer rooms with air conditioning and free Wi-Fi. We didn’t use either, but it’s nice to know they have it. I always request a pool-side guest room as they are on the lowest level of this establishment and the farthest away from road noise up at the top of the hill where you check-in. Private parking is available.

You can have dinner ‘pool-side’ which we did for one night. They simply set up a few tables along the pool terrace and light it with torches and candles. You overlook the pool, the harbor, and the illuminated Castle—pure magic! It was the most perfect evening. Food was excellent and reasonably priced (menu is in your room). This small gourmet restaurant is a member of La Chaine des Rotisseurs and offer a dining menu with French and Turkish dishes. The poolside bar serves a variety of drinks.

Breakfast is served in the upper level eating room which is quaint. They offer a traditional Turkish breakfast buffet consisting of several types of bread, cheeses, butter, salami, honey, cherry jam, olives, tomato, cucumber, fresh fruit, fruit juice, corn flakes, yogurt, tea, coffee, milk, and eggs any style. The yogurt with local honey is like having dessert for breakfast. An indulgence on this trip.

The grounds are compact and beautiful. All rooms connect to either a shared or private garden lined with trellises overgrown with bougainvillea. Antique jars in the flowery gardens provide a prolific blending of vibrant colors all around the hotel. The infinity pool is always clean and inviting … even for an early morning swim before breakfast. The padded chaise lounge chairs are perfect for relaxing around the water and underneath a canopy of bougainvillea.

The staff is hardworking, professional, and quietly respectful of guests’ privacy. They are warm, friendly and helpful. Limited English spoken, but communication isn't a problem.

This is not a place for young children or people who cannot navigate steep stairs. Stairs are the only way to get around--and from the reservations desk to the pool should be traversed with care.

Second, Bodrum happens to be my favorite Turkish city. It is the ancient city of Halikarnassos (1200 BC), and is the birthplace of Herodotus and site of the Mausoleum of King Mausolus (350 BC)—deemed to be one of the Seven Wonders of the World.

Not to be missed is the Bodrum Museum of Underwater Archaeology in the Castle of The Knights of St. John. The Knights, who built this castle, used stones that once were part of the Mausoleum of Halicarnasus. This is the most amazing example of re-use/recycle I’ve ever seen. The Museum houses amazing underwater discoveries of ancient shipwrecks in the Aegean Sea. Don't miss the vast collection of amphoras, ancient glass, bronze, clay and iron items nor the two reconstructed ancient shipwrecks.

Shopping is delightful in this city and there is something for everyone. And if you want a sandy beach, then Gumbet Beach is less than two miles away from your hotel.

Antique Theatre is not the cheapest hotel in town but is the best value for your money. The owners have taken absolute care in every detail--from perfect service, to beautiful rooms and grounds, and by providing spectacular views over the harbor to the castle. Their pool-side restaurant is one of the best in town and their inventive cuisine will have something to please every palate.

Room Tip: I always request a pool-side guest room as they are on the lowest level of this establishment and th...

My husband and I were traveling for 7 weeks, mostly in Turkey and Greece, including Cyprus. The owner of this hotel was out of town so his daughter from Canada, who was visiting her father, hosted us on Wednesday, Oct 26. We loved the place....very comfortable room with terrific views of the town, especially the harbour. Everything worked in the room. Directions to the hotel were flawless. We also enjoyed our dinner at the hotel. Dinner menu and prices were in the room....that was thoughtful. Wonderful service from the small staff throughout. Easy walk to the Bodrum center. We only wish we could and would have stayed longer. Next time!

Our only complaint was that the road in front is noisy. The hotel is built against a fairly steep hill, so to avoid that, simply request a room that's away from the road, i.e., lower down the hill.

The view of Bodrum from this charming hotel was absolutely stunning, and it was located within an easy walk to town. The whole environment has warmth, style and elegance, which is a true reflection on the wonderful owners who made us feel right at home! It is a peaceful resting spot with a delightful ambiance. Highly recommended for a unique and inviting experience!

This was exactly the hotel we were hoping it would be..... absolutely charming!
Our room was inviting, comfortable, clean. Every detail seemed thought out and to us
perfect. We loved the style and ambience of the whole hotel where from every spot is
a view of the magnificent Bodrum harbor. The dinners by the pool were of gourmet quality and memorable The service was excellent, friendly and most helpful in every regard. We highly recommend this very private, unique hotel. It felt like our home in Bodrum. If you find your way here, you are lucky!

During last weekend, we had been decided to make a short trip to Bodrum. We have booked our reservation from internet and moved as three person (with our 13 years old child) and our liitle pet (dog) as well. First of all, the location of the tel was very good enough, that you can easily reach out to the center by walking in about 15 minutes. But the more important point, the panoramic view was excellent. I can easily say that it was fascinating. Beside that, the hospitality of the staff was very warm and satisfactory. Our room was clean and especially it was so cute.Food was also good enough and delicious.
Shortly, we were glad to spent our last weekend at such a kind place which was make feel ourselves stayed in our own summer house instead of a hotel.

We had 9 days at this hotel and it was the perfect hideaway from work and stress. The staff are friendly and service minded, the owner does everything he can to make your stay a pleasant one. This is a hotel to go to if you want something special. You find turkish breakfast with a stunning view, small but clean rooms. The hotel is built lika a theater with little patios here and there where you can take a drink or a coffe or just talk with the neighbours, or read. The pool is on the edge also with a stunning view with good space and clean water. They have good food at the hotel, but its just a 10 min walk to the town center with a marina and several shopping streets and lots of good restaurants. Its also just 2 min away from a special turkish restaurant. The beach in Bodrum is not the best, but the doctor takes you in the hotel car to whatever beach you want only 20 min away by car and its easy to take the bus back. There are some stairs to climb to get to the room but its charming with the flowers everywhere and the cats. We loved it here, definately going back later.

Room Tip: charming rooms

The Antique Theatre Hotel enjoys an outstanding position on the Bodrum hillside offering panoramic views across the harbour, castle and old town. The unique architecture and intimate interior design offer the discerning quest an unrivalled ambience whether it be a tranquil day by the hotel's beautiful pool or a base for cultural visits to Kos or even Ephesus or both. In either case the sophisticated experience of an evening meal in the open air by the pool is not to be missed. The menue reflects the very best international cusine has to offer , especially the fillet steak with that roquefort sauce. Each dish is freshly prepared and hotel's staff ensure that every detail is considered resulting in a memorable, relaxing and enjoyable evening which creates that special occasion needed on every holiday.

The Antique Theatre is not for those seeking the enjoyment and facilities of a 4 star beach spa hotel, but for those wishing to seek a unique and charming experience we suspect it is second to none in Bodrum. We have frequently visited Bodrum over the last two decades and our choice has been and will remain The Antique Theatre.

Room Tip: Discuss details directly with the hotel at the time of booking.
