The Antique Theatre is small, charming, and stylish boutique hotel with tastefully furnished rooms set on the steep hillside across the street from an antique Roman amphitheater.
There were eight of us staying here after a week-long Gulet trip on the Turquoise Coast. I’d stayed here before with my parents, and it was nice to be able to visit again with my girlfriends.
First, the gracious hotel. It caters to those who want to be off the beaten path, but close enough to the city center as to making walking possible (coming back…all uphill…may take some time). The 18 rooms are small and modestly appointed with a feel of serene elegance.
The beds can be on the FIRM side, the linens are good, and there is nice, original artwork and antique mirrors on the walls. Bathrooms are on the small side, but everything works—just not a lot of room to move around. All rooms have a balcony or terrace and the views to the pool and the imposing Castle of the Knights of St. John is just across the harbor.
They offer rooms with air conditioning and free Wi-Fi. We didn’t use either, but it’s nice to know they have it. I always request a pool-side guest room as they are on the lowest level of this establishment and the farthest away from road noise up at the top of the hill where you check-in. Private parking is available.
You can have dinner ‘pool-side’ which we did for one night. They simply set up a few tables along the pool terrace and light it with torches and candles. You overlook the pool, the harbor, and the illuminated Castle—pure magic! It was the most perfect evening. Food was excellent and reasonably priced (menu is in your room). This small gourmet restaurant is a member of La Chaine des Rotisseurs and offer a dining menu with French and Turkish dishes. The poolside bar serves a variety of drinks.
Breakfast is served in the upper level eating room which is quaint. They offer a traditional Turkish breakfast buffet consisting of several types of bread, cheeses, butter, salami, honey, cherry jam, olives, tomato, cucumber, fresh fruit, fruit juice, corn flakes, yogurt, tea, coffee, milk, and eggs any style. The yogurt with local honey is like having dessert for breakfast. An indulgence on this trip.
The grounds are compact and beautiful. All rooms connect to either a shared or private garden lined with trellises overgrown with bougainvillea. Antique jars in the flowery gardens provide a prolific blending of vibrant colors all around the hotel. The infinity pool is always clean and inviting … even for an early morning swim before breakfast. The padded chaise lounge chairs are perfect for relaxing around the water and underneath a canopy of bougainvillea.
The staff is hardworking, professional, and quietly respectful of guests’ privacy. They are warm, friendly and helpful. Limited English spoken, but communication isn't a problem.
This is not a place for young children or people who cannot navigate steep stairs. Stairs are the only way to get around--and from the reservations desk to the pool should be traversed with care.
Second, Bodrum happens to be my favorite Turkish city. It is the ancient city of Halikarnassos (1200 BC), and is the birthplace of Herodotus and site of the Mausoleum of King Mausolus (350 BC)—deemed to be one of the Seven Wonders of the World.
Not to be missed is the Bodrum Museum of Underwater Archaeology in the Castle of The Knights of St. John. The Knights, who built this castle, used stones that once were part of the Mausoleum of Halicarnasus. This is the most amazing example of re-use/recycle I’ve ever seen. The Museum houses amazing underwater discoveries of ancient shipwrecks in the Aegean Sea. Don't miss the vast collection of amphoras, ancient glass, bronze, clay and iron items nor the two reconstructed ancient shipwrecks.
Shopping is delightful in this city and there is something for everyone. And if you want a sandy beach, then Gumbet Beach is less than two miles away from your hotel.
Antique Theatre is not the cheapest hotel in town but is the best value for your money. The owners have taken absolute care in every detail--from perfect service, to beautiful rooms and grounds, and by providing spectacular views over the harbor to the castle. Their pool-side restaurant is one of the best in town and their inventive cuisine will have something to please every palate.
