I visited this museum twice with my children. (2 boys between 3 and 8) Brought the relatives the second time around..gram ma, gram pa,aunts uncles,...both times it was fantastic. My kids loved the spooky but chilly ride down into the mines, and equally the train trip around the mountaintop. Combined with a trip to Knoebels Amusement Park the same week and everybody was very happy. Bring a picnic lunch for the park across the street from the mine and you have at least another hour of activities for the young ones.

This is a great place to visit. Not only do you get all of the history and experience of seeing a real coal mine but a real steam engine train ride too. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Our tour guide was able to answer any of our questions.
Was very interesting to see what life as a coal miner was and the brutal work conditions they endured. Keep in mind it's cold and dirty in the coal mine so you have to dress accordingly.

My daughter and I had a great time. It was fun and we learned some interesting things. We only did the coal mine tour (we couldn't get there on a day for the train). We do hope to go again and do the train. You do need a jacket.

As a local we never expected to learn the history of the mines or expect to get out of the coal car and walk in the mine. - Tip: cool & damp with dripping water so wear a jacket or old hoodie to fit in. The Guide was most knowledgeable and excited to field questions from out group. He includes humorous props as well as old tools to help you enjoy the stories of the old mine - Would recommend for all ages! - We already expect to return with our Parents to share this local treasure & take the train ride. - Th e Ashland area is quite beautiful in the Fall with all the leaves changing

Very interesting to see the conditions in which miners and young children worked. Guides are knowledgeable. Dress for temperatures in the 50s, as the mine is cold and damp. Ride is extremely squeaky and rickety, so it wouldn't be appropriate for people who are elderly or particularly sensitive to those things. Otherwise I would give it five stars. Nice selection of books in the gift shop. Clean bathrooms (at least when we were there) and some food service (burgers, soda).

Coal had its glory days, in a sense, but according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, it has been the cause of an extremely high rate of death, injury, and illness. And according to the Union of Concerned Scientists, it is the single biggest source of air pollution. I hope the region is making plans to move forward and provide jobs that will keep its younger people in this beautiful region.
