If you like tapas, you must try Jaleo's Sunday Tapas Special. Great selection of high quality tapas for $35 per person. Get there before 7 PM and take advantage of the added Happy Hour. This is an incredibly good deal and the food is great. You won't regret your visit, and I'll bet you'll be telling others about this incredible deal.

Jaleo in Crystal City is the latest in this "chain" by Jose Andres. But frankly, it does not seem chainy at all.

We were here on a Sunday, when they have a tapas special. For only $35 there are 5 courses. Try ordering ala carte for $35, can't be done.

I started with a wonderful cucumber-y gazpacho, then sauteed spinach with apples and raisins, then batatas bravas (an all time favorite) with a delightfully spicy pepper sauce; then calamari with garlic (of course!). Dessert was a wonderful flan.

Did I mention that the portions were quite large by anyone's tapas standards.

A delightful Rioja, La Grana tempranillo, set it all off perfectly.

After a miscue on the timing of the courses, which were coming one on top of each other, a quite word to our server righted that ship.

We ate with some friends at Jaleo in Crystal City on a Tuesday evening. The food, drink and ambiance were just great! We were familiar with Spanish restaurants by Jose Andres but had never eaten at this one in Arlington. The menu of tapas and other Spanish food is extensive. Though tapas are said to be small tastings, some of ours were nice size. 3-4 of them are just fine for a meal. Just don't expect to have any leftovers. Just fine with us. We had delicious gazpacho, chicken, salchisso (sausage), croquetas, patatas bravas (spicy roasted potatoes) and desserts. Extensive selection of beers and wines. Excellent service. There is a municipal parking lot across the street. Crystal City Metro (subway) station is nearby. Highly recommended!

In July I had a very enjoyable dinner with my wife, adult children, and their spouses. There was "something" for everyone to enjoy and share (or not). One daughter and her husband are vegans, my wife doesn't 'do' pork, etc. Here, everyone is "happy"! (I guess that is why my younger son picked it; good job, J.R.!).

Do you really know what tapas are?! It may not be the best or close to perfect traditional Spanish cuisine, but rating it for what it is - it is fairly good! They do a good job at the taste renderings with some dishes, but don't quite hit the upper mark with me! The downside is most folks don't understand tapas, and end up getting the short end of the stick value-wise. Tapas typically are snacks in Spain, here, it's become a way of making more money on smaller dishes. Overall the ambience and service is mediocre, the tastes are above average - but don't expect real Spanish for your taste buds. Don't go their hungry!
