The ryokan was only a few minutes’ walk to the Yubata, but it could take you ages to get to it if you drive because the Yubata main street area was a maze of very narrow streets, most of them one-way but were not clearly marked as such.
Compared to the other onsen ryokans we had visited before, I would rate this ryokan as average ie nothing memorable nor unpleasant either. One thing that caught our attention was that this ryokan must be very keen on energy savings, because they had a notice inside the room (in Japanese) which said air-conditioning would be turned off between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. the next morning. The notice said that Kusatsu was very cool in the morning and at night time so there shouldn’t be a big problem for guests. We were there in early August, we opened the windows at night and it was cool enough for us.
The public onsen bath was ok, but the massage chairs in the lounge room was not complimentary (as in Hotel Boun where we stayed the night before).
We did have a funny incident during our stay. While we were having our in-room kaiseiki dinner, the candle light which warmed the food went out and I called the front desk to have it replaced. As expected, they couldn’t understand a word I said and I was forced to mumble “fire” in Japanese - knowing that it was an incorrect term but the only word I knew that was remotely relevant to the circumstances. Of course the staff was scared out of his wits and rushed to our room immediately thinking our room had caught fire. He laughed heartily when he found out what happened. I believe only 1 or 2 front staff spoke some English, the rest none at all.
