Guest House IZA Kamakura
Reviewed 22 June 2016

Location, location, location...this is my second stay here at Iza. I specifically come to Kamakura to visit the temples, and if this is your goal it's hard to find a better location. Hase-Dera is about 300 yards and Kotoku-in (the Great Buddha) is a further 400 yards. Other temples I recommend are Engaku-ji and Kencho-ji (MUST climb up the hill at the back).
Be aware that this is a backpacker-type hostel with basic accommodation. It is clean and the staff are extremely friendly. There is one room with a double bed and apart from that room, beds are bunk-beds in a shared room. The first time I stayed I was able to book the double bed room, this time the only bed I could get was a bunk. Oh well, the alternative was to be miles away and pay 10X! The bunks have privacy curtains the full length , and night lights and outlets to charge your phone/ipad. The outlet style is the same as USA.
Breakfast (either Japanese or Western) is available for 500Y starting at 8.30, you need to tell them the night before. There is a minimum charge (100Y) for a towel, no big deal but get it when you check in, as there are no staff there early in the morning till 8.00. I had the Japanese: Miso soup with onion, Salad, Rice in wraps, tea or coffee. Western style is eggs and toast.
This time I had a plan to visit several temples in one day so I rented a bike (available on site) for the day for 1000Y. Bikes are good with 6 actual gears, real brakes (not the stupid pedal backwards kind) and a basket . Traffic was busy so the bike was great for zipping around cars with no waiting.
You can walk here easily the 400 yards from Hase station (6 mins, 190Y Enoden line from Kamakura). My suggestion for train to Kamakura is to go to the JR office and ask. From Narita Airport the route I like is to take the NEX all the way to Ofuna. Change once there for the 6 minutes to Kamakura. If you buy a roundtrip from Narita to Kamakura at the Narita JR office, with a non-Japanese passport you can get a huge discount: 4000Y round trip - about 50% off.
So if you don't mind basic beds and basic food, IZA is a wonderful place as a base in Kamakura,

Room Tip: One double private room available: others are bunks.

Wonderful atmosphere created by the owners of the guest house. We could even hear his playing on some instrument! The room was very tidy but extremly small. But the lack of the space is something typlical for Japan. The building is just 3 minutes by walk to the ocean. The price is very reasonable.

I really enjoyed my time at this guesthouse. It was very small, but had such a lovely feel. Homely, safe, relaxing, chilled. Just what was needed after being in the hectic city.

This guesthouse is very small, the room we had, had a bunk bed in it and with bunk bed there was really no room at all. To the extent that one person would have to get ready and then either sit on their bed or sit in the communal area to give the other person space to move around (such as getting into backpack/getting dressed can only be done one at a time). Sounds extreme, but it really wasn't a big deal as it was such a lovely place we enjoyed sitting in the communal area and hanging out with the locals/staff.

The location is one road away from the beach so about a 2 minute walk if that. It is round the corner from the local station which is hase station and is only 3 stops away from the city centre of Kamakura. (So just make note that this hotel is not located near Kamakura train station, but is just three stops away).

Wifi worked fine. Can rent bikes as well, which is ideal for cycling alongside the beach and exploring the area.

Overall had a great time here and would definitely return.

My friends and I stayed here for two nights, the hostel is clean and the staff are very friendly. The bar was good and relatively cheap. That's where the positives end.

The negatives: there is only one bathroom for men and two showers for the entire hostel. The quality of sleep was atrocious because the bunk beds were old and as a result had a big dip in the middle which made sleeping very uncomfortable. The blinds were useless so as soon as the sun came up the room was totally bright and woke us up. The walls are paper thin so you can hear people in the other rooms and walking up and down stairs etc. For me the whole point of a hostel is to sleep. I got very little here for the two nights. I wouldn't recommend staying here.

Very disappointed staff's attitudes.
Very route, no heart, no flexible at all.

Dinner was horrible. We paid lots of money but provided very limited wired foods.

But they pretended friendly to foreign customers.

Anyway I will never go there.

Stayed for 2 nights in the male dorm. Met other travellers in the downstairs bar which was comfortable and played jazz and swing music.
Beds big size.
Staff very good
Round the corner from a law sons convenience store
Right by the beach, popular with surfers, and there's a shop where you can rent surfing equipment, around 3000yen for a days surfing.
Located in Hase which is a great area for seeing the 2 best temples in Kamakura, and also the start point of the best trail.
Evening food is ok but breakfast a little small.
Highly recommended if you want to get out of the city
