Worth a visit. Never disappointed with japanese market. Good selection of fruits and vegetables and seafood! All fresh and yummy. Can have breakfast or lunch there. They are all linked, one lane to the other and in no time you will reach the train station.

Really good to see and smell such a wide range of local foods. I bought a very reasonably priced punnet of strawberries (delicious). A great place to come if you want to pick up some fruit on your travels. Compared to similar markets in Kyoto and Tokyo these are not crowded and easy to negotiate.

Take a morning stroll through the market and see the many fish, vegetables and fruit stalls as well as some stalls selling snacks. The local supermarket is also abutting it. The seafood stalls were especially interesting as many of the seafood on sale are only found locally. Walk right through the sheltered market and cross the street (sheltered too) into a shopping arcade which is actually made up of a few sheltered pedestrian-only streets/alleys selling almost everything!

Traditional Market of Kokura city
There are many shops and restaurants
You can watch around them, and if you have a challenge mind, you can try many traditional Kokura's gourmet.
For example, Nuka-miso-daki, it's a kind of fermented fishes. Tsuke-mono, japanese pickles, and so on.

People are very friendly, but busy while morning and late afternoon because many dwellers shops for preparing lunch and dinner. So if you want to enjoy, avoiding these timing is recommended.

From Kokura Station you can walk (10min) or ride the Kokura monorail. We came later in the morning, but we were lucky that there were still many stands open. You can buy delicious karaage (fried) foods here for a great price! Many other snacks are also available.

Like any market, you are more likely to get a better choice if you come early.
