This was one of the most beautiful pousadas we have ever stayed at - from the outside it looks very modest, and then you walk into what must have been a former mansion, with high ceilings, big verandas that look out into the bay, and terraces in the rooms. We stayed at a standard room with a view of the Bay. (the downside to this is that we also smelled the Bay early in the morning - but the ceiling fan helped to blow that away). The room was small, and though we were shocked that the door to the room terrace didn't close completely and the bed didn't have a mosquito net, there were oddly enough no mosquitoes. The rooms are small and simple, but clean and well outfitted with everything you need: ceiling fan, air conditioner, table, bench, bed, and closet.

Breakfasts were good and plentiful buffet-style. The pousada is only a five minute walk to Pelhourinho.

Room Tip: ask for a room with a view of the Bay

Very nice Pousada in a safe and interesting part of in the old town. Also a fantastic breakfast in an artistic surrounding ,with view of the port and the bay. You find good restaurant in the immediate neighborhood. I can recommend Poro, ruined by a very resourceful young lady.

Located in the heart of Pelurinho (where the Michael Jackson song 'They Don't Care about Us' was shot), this Pousada has so much character and heritage, it feels like you're living in a museum.
The breakfast spread is huge and delicious. We'd read reviews that the neighbourhood of Pelurinho (while culturally very rich) was unsafe after dark -but when we were there last month, it was crawling with cops 24x7 (also, the locals were friendly and helpful) so we felt very safe.

We had stayed here 10 years previously and asked to be booked in here again . Pousada do Boqueiro is no luxury hotel but it has a lovely atmosphere and delightful staff , particularly David and the lady who is in charge of the kitchen . Other guests have mentioned the excellent breakfasts : much of the fare is home made . The views from the breakfast/dining room over All Saints Bay ( forget the cranes on the seafront) are fabulous and the decor is quirky and idiosyncratic . Ask for room number one ( but three flights of stairs high ) , a shower with a view and air-conditioning , essential if you go in Carneval time ! It's a reasonable walk to the historic centre . Plenty of eateries round about and if you don't want to go out you can order substantial snacks from the kitchen before 7 pm . Take plenty of toiletries with you ; only soap is provided . TV in Portugese only , in sitting area .
.

Room Tip: Room one , with separate bathroom . Very quiet as on sea side

One of the best pousadas I've stayed in, for several reasons.
Upon arriving, I was a bit scared by the barbed wires etc on the façade, but as I walked inside the eclectic yet harmonious decoration and high ceilings of the main hallway charmed me.
The owners were very nice and gave us a room with a view, as we had requested upon reserving two months in advance. The staff was very kind, including the external shuttle service they hired to take us from and to the airport.
The breakfast was the best I've had in Brazil (sorry Brazil, but breakfasts just aren't your thing ;)) All the pastries were homemade, the selection was wide and varied and even changed every day.
The neighborhood is pretty central, close to the Pelourinho, to the harbor, and to the market. There are some small bars nearby where you can enjoy a cerveja on the terrace like a local, or visit one of the lesser known churches.
With all that being said, thank you for a great stay!

Hotel with a great location in Salvador : walking distance from Pelourinho and a great spot to explore the city. This side of the city is really safe even late at night as policemen are guarding the street 24/7.
The hotel is charming, the staff very friendly, the rooms rustic but comfortable. No TV in the room, internet is a lot more reliable in the main areas than in the rooms, but in exchange we had a great sea view, a small private terrace.
Good breakfast on the terrace with a lovely view.

I was apprehensive about visiting Salvador; Would I be safe? Would Salvador live up to the praise? Would I be able to delve into this alien culture? Now I count Salvador among my favorite destinations. Reason: I stayed at the Pousada do Boqueirao--that made all the difference.

This lovingly converted mansion in the Santo Antonio district, within a short walking distance to the center of the old city (called Pelourinho) is THE place to stay in Salvador as far as I am concerned. You know you have come to the right place as soon as you enter the inn: The public spaces are roomy and decorated with local art work. Each room is different-- nothing is "standard" in this delightfully eccentric conversion! I was given the attic "room" ( more of a suite) without asking for it: Sweeping view over the Bay of All Saints...everything made of tropical hardwoods and smoothed out with years of use. Pousada do Boqueirao is an inn of superlatives, but as a practical matter, I should single out the breakfast: Local food (baked good, meat, cheeses, fruits, cakes) generously laid out in the common area, and served on a terrace with a view of the Bay and the harbor. After that buffet, there is no need for another meal for hours to come.

The greatest asset of the hotel is the staff: Nothing was too much trouble for them and the dedicated, conscientious, patient owner, Nino (a transplant from Livorno, Italy). Need a guide/driver? No problem. Need to choose a restaurant? Not a problem. Which band is playing tonight? Not a problem. Want to see a candomble ceremony? Taxi will pick you up at 8:30! I realized quickly that the way to learn about this fascinating city is to ask Nino and his staff.

So, if you are as interested in Salvador as I am, stay at the Pousada do Boqueirao. There are many cheaper places and at least one pricier place (the repurposed Carmelite Monastery), but I doubt they can surpass level of thoughtful service at the Pousada do Boqueirao.

Room Tip: Ask for bay view.
