We loved touring this place. The woodworking and antiques are very beautiful! The basement museum was very entertaining for my husband. :)

First, come during the holidays so you can see the Christmas decorations. Second, while I think the Payne Art Center in Oshkosh is considerably more grand, this home is unique in that it highlights the advent of electricity in homes. The kids really love the hands-on activities in the basement.

This museum is very nice, and it is very historical. There are many old houses in Appleton, but this is one of the best maintained of them. It's right on the river, which is also very beautiful.
I would not reccomend taking kids or young children to this museum, as they would get bored. Older children will enjoy this museum, however. Many schools in the area take kids in upper grades to this museum.

We toured this museum over the Christmas break. It is a Queen Anne Victorian mansion built in the 1880. It is the first house in the world with electricity from a hydroelectric power station. The house has been restored to 1880 elegance - beautiful handcarved woodwork throughout, decorative painted ceilings, 9 fireplaces with decorative tiles and period antiques. Hard to believe that until 20 years ago there was still families living in this huge home. There is a hands-on area in the basement, great for kids or kids at heart. The tourguide was very informative - spotlighting the early electrical history, local history of Appleton, Victorian history and customs and architecture of the home. A must see for only 5 dollars. Good for children over 8. They are open Tuesday-Saturday 10am-3:30pm. Tours last about 45 minutes. After your visit go down by the Fox River and watch for bald eagles - we saw 4 flying overhead. Fratellos restaurant and Atlas Coffehouse both great places for viewing the waterfront.

Growing Up in Appleton Wisconsin was interesting. Seeing as the Hearthstone house is in appleton, it is natural that I of course have been their once or twice. It is an excellent way to preserve a bit of appleton history, as most people might know in the late 80's the city of appletons historical society was offered the house and they turned it down, facing destruction to make more room for memorial drive the current owners of the time were at a rock and a hard place, a private organization funded the money and bought it. Since then they have been renovating, making improvements and slowly making their way to a completely restored museum. I highly recomend stopping by on one of the hot summer days, paying the 5.00 admission and taking a walk back into a piece of appletons history.
