Amazing place on an incredible island!

Review of Mar da Lua
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Mar 31, 2020
We had an amazing 4 night stay at Mar Da Lua. The island is spectacular and the owners of the hotel, Adolpho and Francisco treated us like family. They were so welcoming and kind and provided us with great advice and tours of the island. We took 2 boat excursions on their boat and this was a highlight of our 2 week trip to Brazil. The swimming and the scenery were amazing. The beaches were some of the nicest we have ever seen. The hotel has loads of character and is set in an excellent location with numerous good restaurants within walking distance. We also ate twice at the hotel restaurant and the food was delicious. Francisco also suggested we try Govinda as we wanted pizza one night, so we did and it was amazing pizza with a great atmosphere. The hotel has a nice area to lounge by the waterfront and we watched the sunsets from there. The hotel is also surrounded by lots of lush palm trees, and has a small but refreshing pool to cool off in if you don't feel like swimming in the ocean. Highly recommend this hotel - you will not be disappointed in the service provided by the owners and staff. It is easily reached from Angra Dos Reis on Natiga Fastboat. They take you right to the dock of the hotel. Thanks again to Adolpho and Francisco for making us have a truly memorable experience on Ilha Grande. Hopefully one day we meet again!

Pros;
The location is stunning. Gorgeous views. Friendly staff. Mar da Lua has rustic island charm. So many fish outside the deck. Unfortunately there were storms so we couldn’t make use of the snorkel or paddle board! But the equipment looked good. They also offer boat trips to other beaches but due to weather we could not make use. It was good that there were board games and cards for guests when it rained. Drinks were fairly priced. Food was basic but good. Day beds on the front deck are very nice to relax on.
Cons;
Pillows need extra case on them. Air con unit needs a good clean out. We felt it was not hygienic so stopped using it & used the fan. Fan was fine anyway! Water only just warm enough in the shower. Probably ok usually but unfortunately the weather was cooler with storms so a slightly warmer shower would have been nice. But overall facilities are good for a rustic island get-away

We stayed here for a total of 3 nights in October....we stayed in 2 different rooms as our first choice Suite Luxor mar wasn't available for the first night.
From initially booking with Booking.com Francisco correspondence was excellent. Through various reasons we ended up booking directly via their website and booking process was easy and slightly cheaper :)
The property faces the waterfront and via a gate at the back you can access a pathway that runs along...one way to a small beach & the other to another beach and eating options.
Pros;-
Lovely setting, lovely decking area
Only small hotel with 4 rooms (although all rooms sleep at least 3)
Francisco was very helpful, before and during
Mini bar in room...reasonably priced
Hairdryer provided (not mention on Booking.com)
Fresh bedding and clean quality towels provided
Good food on site (although limited options) and Du who works on the evenings was such a lovely gentle helpful soul
By the end of the stay we had them trained (all in good humour) at breakfast to have "aqua caliente" ready for our all important cuppa....seemingly not many tea drinkers have stayed before....the staff really are very accommodating
Arranged a boat to take us back to the mainland when the scheduled one was not running at a good time for us.
You can pay cash or credit card & run up a tab during your stay...so all very relaxed
Cons:-
First room Standard Studio...no soundproofing whatsoever, family of 4 next door so very noisy
On several occasions non guests were seemingly welcomed, they used the facilities, sun beds etc, whilst this wasn't a problem for us and as it being off season...in high season it could be! Also it really adds to security issues as rooms have no safes inside and could easily broken in too.
No information in the room.....we were locked out one night (10pm) after being out to a local eatery, bit of a panic but shouting soon raised Francisco!
Families...with screaming out of control children, not the properties fault but did spoil the "idyllic" ambience...parents please be mindful of others!

Room tip: All rooms but Standard Suites are detached, opt for one of those if others noise is a concern

We were staying nearby and our innkeepers suggested hiking or taxi-boating over to Mar da Lua for a mid-day lunch and paddle. The waterside deck and dock facilities were really nice as were the standup paddleboards (SUPs) and paddles. Although we were late for lunch they kindly managed to keep the kitchen open and provided us with something. Wishing Francisco, Adolfo and colleagues great success,

First I want to say that Francisco and Finho, the owners, are amazing hosts. The location is spectacular, right on the water. It’s so peaceful that you don’t want to leave.

The room was spacious and clean with a wonderful view of the ocean. The food was very good too. Don’t forget to have a caipirinha!

The only bad thing is that I only had 1 day to spend at Mar da Lua. Next time I plan to stay longer and enjoy this slice of paradise!

I highly recommend Mar da Lua. Thank you Francisco and Finho!!

Me and my girlfriend stayed here for three nights in July 2019. The hotel is absolutely beautiful with an amazing location and view. In the evening it's possible to relax on the sun deck and get an amazing view of the sun setting behind the mountains across the sea. The owner of the hotel Frabsisco is very very friendly and speaks multiple languages. He will make sure you have a great trip whether you want go paddle boarding, snorkling, hike through the jungle, watch sea turtles or just relax.

I would definitely recommend this place to anyone.
