Asalem is a hidden gem in a world of chain hotels and awful pousadas. We had a most wonderful experience here.
The rooms are charming and rustic but not old. The service is absolutely fantastic, from the reception to the evening manager to the cook.
We had one of my favorite dinners ever, on the porch of Asalem, eating fresh fish for two, prepared by the cook, watching the sun set and the bats and frogs awake for the night.
What a great place.
The only thing to note, which is both good and bad, is that the location of the hotel is not in the main town of Abraao by the pier. Read the review by Adrian P, which explains the situation well. Asalem is a 10 minute boat ride, or a 25 minute walk from town on a rough trail. This helps to separate the hotel from the town and is therefore much more romantic and peaceful. But it also makes it a little hard to get to, especially if you are going back and forth to town for trips or meals, etc.
Anyway, we loved the place and highly recommend it, but if you like things super easy, this may not be the place for you. If you like a little adventure and remote spot, go here as soon as you can.

Room Tip: The newer (white) buildings seem nicer than the original (green) ones.

First arrival on the Island and port was very offputting, a huge ugly cruise liner was moored outside the small harbour and the pier/town was crowded with hundreds of tourists landed from the cruise ship. The arrangement with Asalem was that they would send a boat to pick us up from the pier as there are no roads on the Island. It took a while to locate the boat but once met and arrival at the Asalem about 10 minutes away was like an arrival at an oasis away from the madding crowds and hustle and bustle .
Our room at the very top had a large panoramic window with amazing views which thankfully did not include the cruise ship. Just round the corner was a sandy beach which you could either walk or swim to. If you want to go into town you either get the boat (a small charge is levied) or walk but beware if you walk the path is a rough up and down track part of which is across a beach which means at high tide you get wet.
Excellent breakfast and we ate at the hotel two nights, the food was very good. Staff excellent.Would definitely recommend this hotel but not for anyone that has mobility problems

Room Tip: Get one off the rooms with panoramic windows

Hotel staff were fantastic Aileen and Marcelo were efficient, helpful and very friendly. The food at this hotel is outstanding and served in a beautiful setting where we were able to mingle and chat with other guests easily. It was easy to get boat trips to beaches. We stayed 5 nights tho the eco suite was by far the better option. Would definitely recommend this hotel. Our stay over Christmas was unforgettable and a wonderful introduction to Brazil.

Asalem is simply an oasis.
We stayed in a huge apartment-style hotel room nestled in the jungle and with gorgeous balcony views of the mountains and sea. Not to mention, Crena beach to the right, which plays relaxing live music during the lunch and dinner hours.
The staff at Asalem are stellar. They are always seen with a smile or a wave, and are full of useful tourist information.
In the waters around the hotel are gorgeous sea turtles. One curios sea turtle even came right onto my stand up paddle!
There are many pousadas in Ilha grande. Most seem to be in Abarao. For us, the town centre is too busy, with many boats. Also important to mention, there is a lot of construction going on at the moment, including the reconstruction of a major pier. So although it take 15-20 minutes to walk into the centre, it's worth being further away, to find sanctuary. At night, after dinner, we walked back and even saw glow worms!
The breakfast is great and varied and the hotel's restaurant has wonderful food - a much higher standard than other restaurants on the island.
Overall, we loved it and wouldn't hesitate to return.

Room Tip: We loved the honeymoon suite
