It is a very small place but the daily lunch alternatives are always very good!

They usually have beef, fish and chicken as alternatives.

Excellent choices of bread to taste and an awsome chocolate browne! If you like chocolate you need to try that! For sure you will buy on more slice to go!

Enjoy!

I am writing about the Café Botanica at Rua Capitao Salomao just off Rua Voluntários da Patria in Botafogo. Some of the reviews on this page refer erroneously to the cafe inside the Jardim Botanico.
Food is excellent, fresh and made tastefully with good ingredients.
But before you go please prepare yourself for the dizziest service in Rio de Janeiro. I had been forewarned so I went straight for that day´s special (and since it was 12 noon it was unlikely they´d run out) and the lady tells me straight-faced they´re out of the special, only to reverse that information a few minutes later. So you settle for today´s special, then it takes forever to arrive. It finally arrives, with apologies. You ask for a glass of red wine, and the lady tells you they´re out of red wine. But it arrives a few minutes later. More apologies. The check takes another eternity to arrive. Still more apologies. Ambiance is excellent: the place is organized to look very much like a European bistro, complete with tables so close together that your elbow rests dangerously close to the food at the next table. People whose opinion I respect tell me the afternoon tea is excellent, with muffins etc. At 5 pm, the house fills up quickly. And the service gets worse.

I visited Cafe Botanica Restaurant twice last week, once for afternoon
tea and once for lunch. The afternoon tea, like the owner, is
decidedly English, with both tea and an excellent single farm coffee,
and everything you might miss from Blighty - muffins, cookies,
brownies, and tasty cakes. The cafe was almost constantly full the
whole afternoon, no tourists, just locals, and as the cafe is small
and cosy, conversations often spill over from one table to the next.
Plenty of stuff to take away, the courgette bread is recommended.
Occasionally Leo the chef, will send down some treats, while we were there a batch of fragrant raspberry
cakes caused a frisson of interest and half of then never made it to
the window display. A wonderful place to spend an afternoon people
watching and pampering the taste-buds.

Lunch is a different affair (the Cafe currently closes at 7:30), really tasty beef and salmon
and organic salads, and the risottos looked tempting. Try and get there before 1pm when the executives
arrive and fill up the place. Although not cheap, excellent value for
money.

Humaita is not in a tourist area and it will cost you a R$10 taxi from
the beaches, but it is a safe area to walk around and there are loads
of taxis and a Cobal (covered food market) on the other side of
Voluntarias da Patria where you can buy excellent dried cod (bacalhau)
which they can vacuum-pack for you to take home in your suitcase.
