“Top Hotel and Best Service in Rio”
Reviewed 18 May 2012

Stayed here for 3 nights during my honeymoon in May 2012 and was perfect ending to 2 weeks in Brazil. As others mentioned it is expensive but you are paying for a great location and the best service you can get in Rio (without the stuffiness of Copacabana Palace). After all Rio does not have many 5* hotel options.

The service at the hotel was honestly the best I have ever experienced anywhere in the world including other 5* hotels. Everyone worker we encountered spoke great english and was friendly and willing to help in anyway possible and helped make it a wonderful stay.

I had booked an ocean view room and at check in we were upgraded to the top floor which had an amazing view of Copacabana Beach 1 floor below the rooftop deck, pool and exercise room (Room 1812). Once we were in the room we were sent a complimentary welcome note and desert which was a much appreciated (and tasty) gesture.

Catherine (restaurant hostess) and Andre (Pool bar attendant) were also especially friendly and helpful with making the stay enjoyable by getting us anything we needed.

The rooms were a decent size and decorated nicely as one would except from a JW Marriott. Bathrooms and showers were on the small but not a big deal. What was great is all rooms have individual climate control to change the temperature which is rare in Brazil as well as amenities like an iron, robe, lots of English tv stations, stocked mini bar and fridge. The only downside is there are now open decks off the rooms.

The hotel does have a very large rooftop deck providing panorama views of Copacabana Beach, Rio and Christ Redeemer. Pool was very nice and refreshing and we chose to spend most of our time there instead of crossing the street to the beach. The hotel does have a private section reserved on the beach right across the street and will set you up with chairs, umbrella and towels.

The breakfast buffet has the largest selection of foods and is very well prepared. They had absolutely everything you could imagine or ever wanted and if they didn't have it out they would fix it for you in the kitchen. I would highly recommend booking a rate that includes breakfast it was well worth it.

Room Tip: Room with ocean view is a must. Higher floor rooms offer better views and quieter. Book room with...

It's hard to complain when you get your room for free with points and we were "upgraded" to a room with a view of the beach, but there's little else to commend this hotel. The room was not much bigger than a cabana and the bathroom was also small. The executive lounge was nice and we enjoyed having breakfast there. The concierge was helpful and did give us a good recommendation for the Thai restaurant, Sawasdee, in Leblon when we said we were tired of barbecue. I understand that the prices at this hotel are quite high and I would not have been happy if we were paying full freight.

Room Tip: Beach view is the only desirable room here.

Great location, great gym and pool. Rooms are nice but not very spacious, Can't understand why most of the rooms have an internal view. You will only get a view if you stay in one of the beach front ones, which are more expensive.
Service is good as well as the breakfast. Reccomend this hotel if you are willing to pay the price. Overall you will not find a cheap hotel in Rio.

The JW Marriott is located in the center of Copacabana Beach, so if you are looking for a property on Copacabana, this is about the best choice. I have always stayed at the Othon Palace a few blocks down and decided t try the JW Marriott,

If you are in a city with a beach as beautiful as Copacabana, you have to get a room with an ocean view. I was in an Atrium room for the first two nights and switched to an ocean view the last two nights. Quite frankly the both rooms I experienced are a bit of a disappointment, they are small and the windows are tiny! Why anyone would design a hotel in such a magnificent location and then skimp on window size is simply beyond me. The Othon Palace for example has wonderful balconies and floor to ceiling sliding doors. I was expecting much more of JW Marriott. The Atrium rooms are dark. Two thirds of the rooms are Atrium rooms. They have limited numbers of rooms facing the ocean and of course they attract a healthy premium. Nice bathrooms with good amenities.

The property has a beautiful roof top pool and bar as well as a fitness center which has the best views of any fitness center anywhere in the world. See attached photo – using the treadmill here, it doesn’t get any better, just awesome spectacular views of Copacabana.

The executive lounge is excellent, but again very poorly designed – it is about 3-4 stories in height volume, but only ONE floor, and thus is really way too small for the size of the property. The service there was superb however, with special mention of a Nigerian waiter by the name of Gbenga. Breakfast and happy hour were excellent with generous snacks and free cocktails.

I ate at Taiyou Sushi & Sake Bar one night and arrived at 12:45am and they still served me. Guillermo the maitre d hotel on duty that night was superb and most accommodating. The sushi was ‘ok’ – certainly expensive and the smallest sushi I have ever eaten. I would not go there again.

WiFi access was truly poor and very frustrating.

Bottom line is the hotel is well appointed and nicely decorated with all the expected amenities and has a fabulous location on Copacabana beach. The staff were all excellent and accommodating, especially Lucas, Guillermo, Gbenga and Katia

Room Tip: request high floor ocean facing room

I have stayed over at the hotel a few times. I have to confess that the location is good, but not the best. Personally the best feature of this hotel is the roof top pool and gym. You do not only get fantastic views of Copacabana bay, but the pool is a decent size for a rooftop. The hotel itself is well appointed. If you get lucky and you score an ocean view room, you will get a small room with a nice view,…. But this hotel is new construction and ocean front….who in their sane mind designed the smallest windows ever!!. You do not see the ocean while you laying in bed, nor seated in the desk. You have to stand up! It’s silly!. Linens and other amenities in the room are top notch!
Restaurant food was good but no my taste. I ordered a plain burger and they showed up with like a gourmet version of a burger with Dijon mustard and all….NOT for me!. I got access to the Atrium lounge (their VIP section). It is nice service there and 24/7 snacks and drinks.

BIG CON; If you get a atrium facing room ( I would say over 60 % of the rooms will face the atrium), you will then have no privacy and Friday and sat night , when they have either a band or piano playing….you will get a very noisy room!
Over all a nice hotel, but overpriced!.

Room Tip: Either Pay for an ocean view room, or cross your fingers you get upgraded. Atrium facing rooms are v...

Chose Marriott for the view but would look furthe as the great view from a small room was visable only when you were standing by the smallish window as all the chairs in the room put you below eyelevel to look out at the beach. hoping to be able to lie in bed and see the scene. The service was quite good and the included breakfast was very good. Never used the pool but the walk by didn't look very inviting. It is conveniently located but so are many other hotels with better access to the views.
