Hotel was generally clean, but a little tired in places, and the rooms were not immaculate - some silly little details like sinks not properly cleaned, very slightly damaged bed spreads, etc., but it did not affect the overall experience - Rio Sheraton Grand is a very good 4*+ hotel.

Check-in was great, very efficient. The bar and restaurant staff (especially at the Lobby Bar, Martini Bar and L'Etoile) were excellent.) Cosmopolitans in the Martini Bar were delicious! We had the Taster Menu at L'Etoile - it was wonderful, but make sure you're hungry, it looks like tiny dishes, but it's a lot of food! And although the table flatbread is absolutely delicious, try not to fill yourself up and spoil the last couple of courses!

Pool and pool area generally were great. I was not expecting the heat in the adult spa-pool - it was like a hot bath! Poolside drinks service was a wee bit slow... I probably saved myself a fortune... but there was no chance of over-indulging, unless you went to fetch drinks for yourself!

The location was super for us as we wanted to be on the beach, but didn't really want to be right on Ipanema or Copacobana. Taxis were plentiful, and the Hotel cars were always available. (Shuttle bus also running all day, if you're willing to stick to a timetable)

Room Tip: Go for a room higher up in the hotel if you can - the views (toward Ipanema in particular) are wonderful - also, in the lower down rooms although you are a stone's throw the beach, you are woken by bird 'song' VERY early in the morning. I also personally felt that higher floors were better from a security perspective.

And is next to a nice Beach as well not to forget to mention that you have access to the beach from the hotel where there's a pool next to it.

We stayed there during the Olympics and found it to be a great base. Our lovely corner room looked along Ipanema Beach, over the small private beach and also up to Christ the Redeemer. Unlike some of the other reviewers we had no issues with the air-con. Admittedly the bath/shower arrangement could be better - but it didn't take long to figure out how to prevent the floor getting wet. The hotel was very busy during our stay and from our point of view everything seemed to be managed very well.

The walk from the Hotel to the beautiful long beaches of Ipanema and Copacabana is good exercise and really enjoyable, and the hotels own little beach and pool areas are great too for lazy days.

The downstairs restaurants weren't all open while we were there, but those that were, were OK. However the restaurant on the top floor is fabulous, with great food and service and views. You MUST have at least one meal there!

We were there for the Olympics 2016 and loved every minute - Rio did a great job. We felt safe, it was clean, and public transport was fine and easy. It's like any big city though and you do need to be sensible and take care, but we personally had no problems.

We had a very nice meal at "Terese" a restaurant in St Terese, an old part of town. The best part of the evening though was the sunset and view from the garden area above the restaurant. Beautiful.

Room Tip: Corner Suite looking over the beaches

One of the big positives is the way the hotel is sited on the land which means that rooms on both sides enjoy great seaviews. And the views ARE great. The hotel is nice and staff are very accommodating. Rooms are a little tired and yes, we too had problems with air con and elevators. This hotel is a little way from the action, which is positive and negative - for me it was quiet and safe so it wasn't an issue. But if you wanted to walk out of the hotel into a shopping area or busy beach, this wouldn't be for you. I as attending a large conference so all meals were buffet meals, which doesn't result in then quality you would enjoy at an alacarte prune dining restaurant, however there was always a good variety, and it was hot and plentiful. The pool area was nice, but lost sun early due to the shadow of the mountain. I would stay at this hotel again, if the price was right and favourable to other newer 5 star hotels.

We stayed here as part of a business conference group. We had high expectations for the hotel as a Sheraton but unfortunately it didn't live up to our expectations.

Positives:
- nice heated pools
- great views over Leblon and Ipanema beaches from our hotel room, and we could also see Christ the Redeemer from our room which was really special.
- nice to stay at a hotel directly on the beach.

Negatives:
- as others have noted, the air conditioning in the rooms doesn't work properly. It was either freezing cold or we turned the unit off and the room got hot and stuffy.
- the shower flooded the bathroom every time one of us had a shower, due to the design of the shower / bath unit.
- the elevators were very slow and broke down from time to time. Our family got stuck in one of the elevators while we were there.
- the food wasn't that good. We had pizzas at one of the restaurants which were average, and the conference breakfasts at the hotel weren't anything special, either.
- the hotel was located a good 10-15 minute walk from Leblon so it was a long way from the "action". If we were to return, we would stay closer to Ipanema or Copacabana. Having said that, it was a safe and easy walk to Leblon beach and we walked all the way along to Ipanema and Copacabana with our kids (aged 9 and 7).

Most of the negatives could be easily fixed - eg shower flooding, air conditioning and elevators - which would greatly improve the hotel.

Dear nzajt,

First of all, I would like to thank you for this detailed review about your experience with us.

I feel extremely frustrated to realize that we were not able to exceed your expectations and that you experienced few issues during your stay. I am truly sorry for that and explain you that corrective actions will be taken.

Regarding the elevators I really think that could have been because of the number of people in it. Once you were part of a big group and all had the same schedules, we had, during the busy times, a great number of people using the elevators. That could have been the problem and I apologize for that. We will investigate, together with the technician.
In regards to the air conditioner, I am really sorry, but we do not have a heating system in the hotel, due to the usual hot weather in Rio.
With reference to the leaking from the bath tub, I truly need your room number in order to check and fix it.

On the other hand, we thank you for your nice words about the hotel facilities and views.

Once again, I thank you for your time spent on this helpful evaluation and I hope to be able to welcome you again and, at this time, impress you with an outstanding stay.

We remain entirely at your disposal for any assistance and wish you a wonderful week!

Cordially yours,
Isabel Soares dos Santos
