I think the old style Chinese architecture past the gate make this worth a visit. If you are around make sure to have a look.

I was visiting the Food and Drinks museum inside the building next to the gate. I think it is worth a photo stop.
Our driver took us here in between other activities just so we could appreciate the beauty of the gate. There are many other similar gates to this one in other places in China specially if Xian is part of your trip. Worth having a quick look around, unfortunately we were extremely tired after a hot and long day but you can go for a walk inside the gate to an area seem to be full of souvenirs and arts shops.
We visited the Lijing Gate and Old city after touring the very cool Longmen Grottoes. It was a long taxi ride through a polluted and congested city. Once there, the gate itself is cool-looking, surrounded by a moat and some interesting everyday scenes. Inside the gate was a fairly large, local market, with each side street devoted to something else...pets on one street and on another were animals for eating, toys on another, etc. There were some food street vendors but I was a little disappointed that I didn't see more. It would have been cool to see at night, but for the effort to get there, probably something I would skip next time.
Some tourists says that Luoyang people are not friendly, but my husband and I have never experienced that myself, they do stare and they don't bite. They are so friendly and honest, and the Lijing gate, it is well restored, and behind that wall are rows of friendly shops, restaurants, silk scarves, caligraphy brushes, jewelries and other touristy stuff. They even offered us to taste the local snacks, some are so good. We headed to one of the small restaurant that had an English sign DEAR FRIEND, though the lady didn't speak English, pictures of the food with English translation for tourists to point. We choose vegetarian dishes and 500 ml local beer. The aubergine dish was extremely delicious with chilis but it was not that spicy. Total price was A$ 5 dollars, and it blew our minds for such a cheap price, good service, so friendly and the place was clean. Though they didn't have a bathroom, it is just a few meters away the public rest rooms, make sure you wear a mask to the public restrooms, it was not that clean but had a strong odour.
It was interesting to see the place.
Although you can pay 30RMB to go on top, it is much nicer from below. There are nice murals in the building and displays set up inside.
