Beautiful but tiring if not using the cable car, if you follow guided tour, please convince the tour guide to give you more time. If tour guide advise you to walk up slowly and only give you two hours, it will be very tiring.

Use cable car to reach the mid hill, more beautiful scenery at the top of this tourist spot then those assessible on foot. use comfortable walking shoes and make sure your health conditions warrant to walk up and down hundred of steps . spring and autumn is ideal season to visit Huanglong.

Visited Oct 2010. Allow 2.5 hours to get there by car if travelling from Sheraton Jiuzhagou. The road has been completely relaid and is in superb condition. Excellent route through the mountains. On arrival take the cable car to the top and dress in layers. The walkway is wooden, well designed and constructed. Allow 5 hours for a thorough tour and take a packed lunch (order from hotel). When walking at altitude to the top pool, take your time. Entrance cost approx 200 rmb. Lots of clean toilets - western 'portaloos' - but you need to take your own tissue paper. Night before our arrival, it snowed but our day was bright and sunny with the snow capped mountains in the background. Make certain your camera battery is charged with a spare memory card. Take a polorizer if you have one. We certainly enjoyed our visit.

went from Juizhigou up to Huanglong(coloured pools) middle of May, roads were shocking and hardly any water in the pools, certainly not worth the effort, so disappointing. maybe different time of year would be better, but then what condition the road

One must prepare well enough to find out the source of the river. The starting point is around 3200m above sea level and the end is around 3800m above. It may spends over 3 hours to go to the top and return to the base.

There are numerous sights along the river. I couldn't go to the top to see the "Five color pond" and a temple because of the foggy weather. "Five color pond" is the best sights over there.

The first review gives a good overview of the site but, to my mind, overstates the effects of oxygen deprivation. We visited the park with a party with an average age of around 60. Three or four women elected not to even attempt to walk up, but most of the rest reached the top without any difficulty. Sure walking up hill at this altitude is something to do slowly unless you are in a hurry, but only Koreans need puffs of oxygen. My wife any I walked up in about an hour, and I hurried down in about 30 minutes. I am 65 and not a habitual walker. The walk is well worthwhile for the views of pools and waterfalls set against a backdrop of pine-clad mountains, but there's not enough to see to spend more than a couple of hours there.

If the weather is clear, the views of the Min Shan range are impressive on the journey, together with views of Xiu Baoding, China proper's highest peak. Don't get out to sightsee at the high pass (4,280 metres) unless you are well wrapped up - it;s windy and freezing!
