Originally, we had only wanted to stay 3 nights at Zen Garden (Lion Hill Yard) but ended up staying for all 7 nights once we saw the room and also the view outside the room. We had first made a trip to Zen Garden (Wuyi Street branch) to take a look and find the place very nicely decorated n cosy. The downside is that the rooms are a bit small (well apparently for hotels/ inns in the Old Town, the rooms tend to be smaller). We requested to take a look at the rooms at Lion Hill Yard branch before we made a decision and the staff was very quick n prompt in getting their staffa at the branch to lead us there.
It was a very short walk from the Wu Yi Street branch but it is a uphill walk. Yet the effort to walk up the Lion Hill to the hotel is definitely worth it cos from Zen Garden Lion Hill Yard, we get a beautiful view of the Old Town and also that of the surrounding hills & mountains. The environment was also much more peaceful as it is away from the noise n bustle of Old Town (which can get pretty noisy at night when the 4 pubs start blaring music out loud).
Upon seeing the rooms on the 2nd floor, we were totally sold on staying here for the entire of our trip! The room is very roomy and well decorated (there was Chinese vases sitting on a display cabinet at one of the walls in the room and underneath the window, there is this lovely daybed with a small table for us to drink our tea and enjoy the view). The bathroom is very new (the hotel is fairly new), clean and modern. Even comes with a bathtub (great to relax in after walkin through the Old Town).
They also provided amenities like toothbrush, Colgate toohpaste, Showerliquid, etc.
The towels are very clean and absorb water very well! The King size bed is a bit hard but still comfortable.
There is also cable connection for those who bring their laptops and a huge flat screen TV with lots of channels to choose from!
The best part of the room is, there are very comforable seats at the corridor outside (corridors are a impt feature of a Naxi home) where one can enjoy the stunning view of the surrounding mountains and the overview of the Old Town. There, one will be greeted by the gentle sounds of the fountain in the hotel's courtyard and also of the birds chirpin in the trees. It is absolutely peaceful and good for one's soul.
If you are a couple, do stay in Rm 211 cos it is one with the best view!
The hotel staff are fantastic too! Once we made our choice to stay at the Lion Hill Yard branch, the staff who guided us there immediately set off to get our luggage for us. During the first 2 days, there weren't much guests and the staff even suggested that we could have our breakfast brought up to our room! We had it at the corridor to enjoy the full view and it was the BEST experience ever!
Even when the hotel was fully occupied, upon our request, the staff also brought our breakfast up for us so that we can enjoy the view while we ate! They were also very patient in taking down our breakfast preference and gave us generous quantities despite our protests that it was way too much!
If you do not want breakfast at the corridor, the breakfast area at the lower part of the hotel is also a very nice place to eat. Very cosy decoration!
Every night when we get back to the hotel, we often head straight to their recept area (richly decorated with nice day beds and antiques) where a charcoal stove provides heat to warm up. Immediately, we were served with hot pu-er tea by the staff. The owner, Mr Ho is very friendly and would share tips on where to go with us. His staff sometimes join in n it is a great pleasure finding out more about Lijiang and the Naxi culture from them.
We were so impressed with their service that we even got them to help us get a driver to drive us to attractions like Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and Tiger Leaping Gorge. N the driver they got us (they have been using this driver for the past 5 years), is very very good! He is also called Mr Ho and is a very careful driver (got to have a careful one cos some of the roads are quite tricky to navigate) and he often point out interesting things for us. One good thing is, it is possible to negotiate a discount off the price of hiring his service for a full day with him!
Overall, our stay at Zen Garden Lion Hill Yard is very memorable cos of the friendliness of Mr Ho the owner and his staff. You feel so pampered and well taken care of by them. Although the location of the hotel requires us to climb up the hill everyday, it also means that we get a lot more peace n tranquility compared to those living in the Old Town itself. Not to mention, the strategic location of the hotel provides us with one of the best view of Lijiang Old Town and the surrounding mountains!
Importantly, we know that each night, we are returning to a 5 star like accomodation made cosy by friendly and well trained staff!
