My review includes not only the Blue Tang home itself, but also reviews the unit's management company, Roatan Property Management.
The Blue Tang unit itself is an extremely nice unit, modern, uniquely furnished and well maintained. As others have stated, the views are excellent, the setting remote, quiet and secure. The home has AC, but similar to many Caribbean and European homes, the AC is per room versus whole house AC. The home is well equipped with kitchen utensils, and the same for games, DVD's, and books. This home is very obviously used by it's professional owners, and we certainly appreciated it being available to us. Very few people will be disappointed with this rental. Landscaping near the home is superb.
Despite the VRBO verbal overview, walking to the ocean may be a bit beyond most folks...especially those who are less fit, older or have little children. Having said that, the walk to the ocean is downhill (you pay the price on your return trip home though!), paved, and landscaped to perfection. Children of all ages will enjoy looking and watching the myriad Agoutis on the grounds, and lizards of many species. Bird activity in the morning is also delightful. The actual walk...from doorstep to water at the beach is about 3,600 feet, if using the far east Lawson Rock ocean side entrance...about 750' closer if using the entrance located directly across the road from entrance to this unit. Be aware, you do have to cross the road, which can be busy at times, to access any beach. Bottom line...a rental car may be in order.
Lawson Rock itself is a very nice facility. It would have been wonderful if some Lawson Rock facility documentation in Blue Tang, or even a verbal overview via the Roatan Property Management agent was afforded. There are at least three pools available for the Blue Tang patrons, plus kayaks, fitness room, and likely more...if you do your own sleuthing.
While everyone at Roatan Property Management was extremely pleasant, end results determine efficacy and satisfaction. In our case, we paid the $50 for 5.6 GB of internet use...despite only sending and received 5 TEXT ONLY emails, we used our 5.6 GB in less than two days...something was amiss, as I am savvy on internet use and sensitive to data caps. Our Roatan Property Management agent simply said...oh well...guess you used it all up. Not possible. Very disappointing. I'm reasonably confident I received the "tail-end" of a previous party's data allotment. I don't use 5.6 GB of data at home in a month. On the same media theme, while Blue Tang TV reception was acceptable for less than two days, it too went downhill fast. It took three days for our Roatan Property Management agent to show up, and while she did do everything in her power (and that was alot) to remedy the TV reception (including bringing repair techs on site). We effectively had the use of a very small TV for less than two days. No offer for compensation was offered for our lack of internet access or TV. Double disappointment.
Would we return? Perhaps. The Lawson Rock condo units directly on the beach are extremely nice, and priced every bit as competitive as Blue Tang. Of course, those same condo units lack the serenity, privacy and decor of Blue Tang. Compromises to both.
My last comment is a positive one, if you're an avid snorkeler. The reef directly off of Lawson Rock is truly exceptional. We have snorkeled fringe reefs all over the Caribbean...for decades. This Lawson Rock reef is surely within our top 5 worldwide. Yes, it's a longer swim (1300 easy feet), but worth it...especially if it is calm allowing snorkeling within the reef and onto the ocean side. Do swim east to the channel...you can't miss it as it is a sheer wall, equal to or exceeding many walls found diving. Lots of healthy coral, lots of fish, invertebrate and other species. The reef alone is reason enough to try Blue Tang.
Beautiful house and spectacular view of the reef. Very, very comfortable with full amenities. We had a family gathering and so enjoyed relaxing by and in the pool, eating on the spacious veranda with the cool ocean/hilltop breeze, and having a family dinner in the large kitchen and dining room. We all had our own spacious rooms, but the Master bedroom is luxurious - and the king size bed heavenly. Nice to have a separate guest house with two individual rooms and bathrooms for our 25 year old children and their significant others - everyone had their privacy and morning schedule. For our group of 6, it was a perfect setting. Large kitchen with a full refrigerator and we all enjoyed our morning breakfast and coffee by the pool with the most beautiful view of the green and blue ocean waters. Large, separate room with two couches for tv or to get away and read a book by the big windows. On our last night, we all ended up sitting and playing a goofy game the kids had brought along.
Great location and ocean views, nestled in the trees, but only 10-15 minutes to the West End. The house is on a beautiful, gated property - very safe and secure. Short drive, and then we enjoyed the beaches at West Bay and nice dinners at West End. Roatan Oasis is our favorite restaurant! We quickly could run home for a shower, before going out at night. Nice to be away from the beach resorts and see the local island culture. Eldon's is a super local grocery store - almost everything anyone could want. Having a house made it nice to cook our own breakfasts, make to-go lunches and set our own schedule, less time sitting at a restaurant and more time in the water and soaking up the sun.
Not far to the east side of the island and our day adventure to Pidgeon Cay - one of the most beautiful unspoiled reefs we have ever seen in the world. Good snorkeling and fun, wide, soft sand beach at West Bay. We went diving, snorkeling, jet skis, shopping, and enjoyed local live music, pizza, and cold drinks at Banarama. We also took the free kayaks available at the beach access associated with the house out to the reef and enjoyed an hour long late afternoon paddle. Out by the reef, the water is so crystal clear that that the colorful tropical fish and coral can be explored along the edge of the reef. After the paddle, we enjoyed a long sunset from the benches on the large, two-story pier / structure associated with the property. The benches have full cushions - should have brought more wine and beer in the ice chest! Beautiful evening as a sky full of stars came out.
Great location, great house, super AC for a good night's sleep, and so very relaxing! I need more vacation time to come back sooner, great house for a very fun, island family vacation!
Blue Tang is a perfect property. The house has everything you need and all appliances work great, including the AC which we used at night. Having the separate guest house is great and provides much more privacy than you would get with most houses that have 4 bedrooms. The plunge pool and views are amazing! I've stayed here twice and would definitely stay here again.
What a great place! Clean and comfortable. We felt secure the entire time we were a the house .... coming in and out through the night. This house was centrally located with all necessary ammenities. Can't say enough good things about this place.
I stayed in the Blue Tang house while on a fishing trip with friends. Let me just say that it exceeded my expectations. Great common areas, vistas to the ocean, infinity pool, large bedrooms / bathrooms, and just a short drive to the popular West End area. Will definitely be returning soon!!!
