“Over-priced & bell-boy opened our bags and stole our dough”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 January 2012

We stayed for one night in a tree house. The trip in the jeep to the Nature Zone was great fun as was the trek we took on our own from the Nature Zone to town (you do not need a guide, this was one of the best treks we've ever gone on). Although it's special and the view is great, this lodge is over priced and the food was inedible. I asked for a vegetarian dinner and they served me potatoes, rice and bread (crazy considering what an incredible vegetarian paradise India was).

We went on the great hike in the morning and asked them to drive our bags to us in Munnar. When the bags arrived, we went through them to get out a tip from a wallet, which was wrapped in an unlikely wrapper and stuffed in the bottom of the bag (they have no safe and we always carry our valuables with us but the staff seemed very trustworthy). We discovered that our wallet had been emptied of several hundred dollars. We called the manager and he found out immediately that the bellboy had helped himself to all of our money. He was able to recover all of it and drove it down to us in Munnar. Alls well that ends well, but we lost several hours of our day dealing with this and it left a sour taste. We spent one month in India and this was the only time we were ripped off.

THE GOOD: This place is interesting, it has the most beautiful views and setting. The food is delicious too. But it is in no way a resort, it's camping! But camping in beautiful surroundings! THE BAD: The staff leaves more than a little to be desired! I can't say that about everyone, Joby was a wonderful asset. He was in high demand as he was the only one who actually seemed to care about the guests. We arrived at night which I don't recommend at all, it was hard to find our way around and cold. The staff did not tell us but there was a dinner at 8, breakfast in the morning, and a campfire at night! Wish we would have known instead of figuring things out on our own. Nature walks were also offered but we didn't find that out until the night before we left!! Thanks to Joby who took us on a short walk and showed us the cardamon growing and a beautiful sunset. There was one other employee we met in the kitchen/dining area. I can't remember his name but his English was good and he seemed very interested in helping us enjoy our stay, but they seemed to be short handed and he wasn't able to talk much only serve food and run other earrands.
THE UGLY: Also if you're looking for a clean place to stay this isn't it. The tents, while they have a beautiful view, are moldy and dirty. I'll attach pictures, our floor was filthy and the tent as well as shower curtain had mold on it. Our bedcovers were torn and stained. There was a spider and someting else crawling on our tent. When a guy stopped by to bring luggage to the room I pointed it out and he said, that's not a harmful spider, grabbed it and threw it on the floor and stepped on it!!
One other note ... while we were there two guests had money taken, that's something you have to be careful of everywhere though.

Room Tip: the tents closest to the edge or near the front have a beautiful sunset view and are a little quiete...

This was a real highlight of our tour of Kerala. The views and setting are just stunning . The road up to the nature zone can only be travelled in a 4x4 but the staff collected us for the very bumpy jiourney up there from Munnar. Its more than worth it. Just completely peacefulwith the best views. We arrived in time to have lunch and also enjoyed dinner there too. The food was the best we had in our whole trip. Just make sure you're hungry when you take dinner because the portions are very generous. Abihlash & his team extended a very warm welcome. The treehouse was a really lovely experience & one of the highlights of our trip. You will not be disappointed. It can be a bit chilly as its high up & doesn't have heating so go prepared!

The 30 minute off-road jeep journey to Nature Zone really sets the tone- it's hard to get to, it's very high up, and without a 4x4 vehicle you can't leave. There are no accessible shops and the on-site restaurant serves a set menu, so you pretty much have to eat what you're given. For those reasons it might be easy to feel a little trapped, but go with it and Nature Zone genuinely does provide a peaceful, comfortable and relaxing break.

Two nights is about right, and definitely choose the tents not the treehouses. They've got the same facilities, and sleeping in a wooden box up a tree is surprisingly noisy, particularly with all that nature. The tents are perfectly quiet, bug/rodent-free and have spectacular views over the tea plantations.

The food is fine- no choice but all well-cooked and plentiful. Spend the days on walks with the excellent guide Mr Jobbey, go and watch the sun rise and set, and take plenty of books, and you'll have a rejuvenating few days.

Like other posters here, we had rats in our treehouse, which kept us awake in terror all night, much to the amusement of the staff. Luckily, they let us switch with no fuss to one of the tents, which have all the same facilities and even better views. I would thoroughly recommend the tents.

The site is fantastic. Really beautiful sunset and sunrise views over the valley. We were told there were Golden Eagles nesting there, and that a family of elephants does a monthly fly-by of Nature Zone. Didn't see either.

You can't get there by car (though that's half the fun), the food's average, there are limited hikes on offer, and as in many places in this part of India, the service is laid-back to the point of being non-existent. When you ask for anything, expect a long wait or a complete no-show.

Look out for Mr Joby though - he's a star. Helpful, friendly and endlessly amusing, my abiding memory of Nature Zone will be him sprinting like a mountain goat across the twilit site with a double handful of tea and coffee for us.

Room Tip: Choose the tents. Yes, the treehouses sound sexier, but you'll want some sleep.

I was in the tree house on 28th Dec. I was given a tree house which was isolated from others and had lot of problems. The water supply was interrupted in the evening which they rectified after 2 hours. Then the power was interrupted at 2 hours past midnight. There was no one to attend your call. In the morning after repeated calling the person came and told me it cant be rectified. I went out of the resort without taking bath and took another room in munnar to refresh as the weather was so cold and you need at least hot water to do something.
I had horrible experience with this resort and request the resort guys not to give such tree house to any other guests.
