“An other world in Ayutthaya”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 March 2012

A nice place to stay in Ayutthaya. The idea of boutique hotel (often false and only meaning not a gigantic hotek in Asia) here is really true. Few rooms, really attentive staff. This Hotel is located on the river bank, in front a temple. His concept of decoration is a mix of Asia and India but well balanced. We were staying in the room 205: really good size, nice bathroom, large windows and private terrace in front of the river and the swimming pool. The airco was efficace. I think really the good choice, despite the fact that the town is maybe not essential in our travel in Thailand.

Room Tip: in front of the river first floor

I really wanted to give this hotel a five rating, but for a few problems it just didn't cut it. Mind you, this place is quite nice and has many, many positive features, but where it fails to make it to the top is partially within the hotel's control and partially out. One big problem is the construction site next door. The noise starts at 8:00 and doesn't end until the late afternoon. If you are an early riser, and are out seeing the sites all day, you'll never experience the banging and yelling. Hang out by the pool during the day, and it is nonstop. The other niggling problem is the water pressure, which rises and falls on its own accord, blast/trickle, blast/trickle, blast/trickle! Some of the staff are amazingly helpful, while others seem to be on their first day. Uneven service. A hotel at this price point should have better managerial oversight. Waiters that don't know how to serve, maids that enter without knocking first are two examples... I stayed for five days and the fruit plate which was in my room when I arrived still had the same uneaten apple and slightly rotten orange sitting there when I left. This hotel could be great with some minor polishing.

The positives: ideal riverside location directly across from a beautiful Wat, very well decorated rooms and high quality furnishings, bedding, linens and electronics. Flat screen TVs with DVD players and full cable service. High quality soap, shampoo, etc. Some of the staff were very helpful and everybody was friendly. Breakfast is a fixed menu, but you can order your eggs how you like them. The coffee is superb, made with an expensive imported espresso machine.

I will definitely stay again - once the construction is finished next door....

Room Tip: The river view rooms are the best, two have balconies and one a patio. You'll have to pay more...

We stayed for one night only as part of our tour. We had a courtyard room which was very 'boutique in style but had no windows, so quite dark. Well equipped and modern, but river rooms were much better because of the view. Very li mited menu in the evening provided in the coffee shop which is part of the hotel. Breakfast was quite good, but limited choice - again served in the coffee shop. Staff there seemed to be very young and with very li ited English spoken.

Room Tip: Ask for river view room.

The boutique hotel is all very beutiful, very good taste. I got one of the simplest rooms, but it was still big and well decorated. The only remark is that they promised me the pool would be OK, but it was not. They restored quickly after the flood, but they didn´t have time for the pool. Free bikes, most you can do by bike.

This is such a romantic place to stay. The rooms are really beautifull, and the rest of the hotel as well! Its small and has a great eye for details. It has a great view at the river and I really can recommend a boat tour in the afternoon, arranged by the hotel. It also has a good breakfast, no buffet or choice but you get a egg (you can choice what kind of egg) bread, jams and tasteful fruit. And I think its great that the owner is a Thai and not a 'farang'.

I'm always a bit sceptical about the difference over the claims of some properties to be "boutique hotels" when they are little more than smart guest houses. I'm not quite sure where iuDia is on this scale, but I do know that it is a very pleasant place to relax at, and the perfect antidote to Bangkok. There are places that I would happily stay at again, and there are (much less common) places that I would actively seek to stay at again - and this is the latter.

Pros: the whole design and feel and ambience is just very tastefully done - the designer has managed to get a modern looking hotel with traditional Thai touches. The decoration in the rooms feels oriental, without being over the top. A great coffee shop (serving very good drinks - the ice lemon tea had icecubes made from tea), a very pretty pool with a view over the river towards one of the Wats, a good (if limited choice) breakfast, and really fantastic staff. You might tell I kind of liked this place! Free bikes to borrow to get around the island if you're travelling fully independently (we just got a cab from BKK).

Cons: The lack of a proper restaurant, or at least some substantial dishes for an evening meal, is the main drawback. You have to head out - either to the riverfront restaurants (close by) or into the island (some distance away).

We loved the place from the moment we entered. In terms of design, things are well thought out and themed as the owners are academics in design and archeology. All is a stylish mash-up between Bauhaus and ancient Siam. (Customers can borrow a range of fancy coffee table books at the check-in counter.) The place will be a dream once constructions of the Western wing are finished. Downsides are the noise of motorcycles & trucks at U-Thong Road during night time and the nearby Mosque’s morning prayer.

The staff are lovely and bicycles are provided for free to cruise around town. And it is an approximately 5 min ride to the historical sites one needs to see in Ayutthaya. With I U Dia comes a awesome coffee shop to chat, read (there is a little library who want to read up on Siamese hostory) or watch the time go by.
