Wonderful traditional style guest house

3.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Feb 17, 2013
The Riverside Guest house is beautiful to look at, has a wonderful location and a great common area overlooking the water. We had an upstairs room and it was well appointed with its own bathroom, a comfortable bed and a window overlooking the internal garden. Just lovely.

As mentioned in previous reviews, because the building is old you can hear everything from other rooms. We were lucky that the occupants of all the rooms around us were respectful and we had no issues with excessive noise. However, I can see how one loud talker or loud snorer could ruin the experience. We were fortunate but if you are a light sleeper this may not be place for you. Also, if you like to sleep in late this is definately not the place for you because the neighborhood dogs start barking when the sun comes up.

Wi-Fi is available but intermittent at best. We were asked to order breakfast the night before so we foolishly assumed it was included with the room. We were given a piece of paper with some check boxes for ordering but the paper did not have any prices. It was a little shocking to find out that it wasn't included and was very expensive. Lesson learned for us but it is something you may want to be aware of.

Very nice teakhouses with a large communal area. Very clean and rooms tastefully decorated. We stayed at the cheapest room (350 Baht, shared bathroom which was spotless !). Breakfast very expensive but good quality (home made jam is delicious). Unfortunately quite loud due other guests making noise or the owner having a party until 3am with friends. Would stay again due to the special location along the river with a hang out feel. Wifi needs improving as we had issues too trying to book a flight with interrupting connection. B&B serves no food other than breakfast, plenty of cheap restaurants very close, walking street market on sat and sun at the doorstep.

As previous reviewers have mentioned, the hotel is in a good location. The wifi was weak and I had lots of difficulty with signal issues whilst trying to use Skype. In the 4 rooms upstairs, the walls don't go all the way up and thus you can hear everything your neighbours do. I am a light sleeper and this combined with the street noise that started very early made it hard to sleep. The room was small and cramped but this is to be expected for the price. I tried to organise transport through the hotel and they simply told me to wait out on the road for a songthaew. I thought this very poor as it was very clear on arrival in lampang that none of the drivers spoke English. We booked for 3 nights, in the end we left after one because we found it very difficult to find things to do in lampang and my travel companion was sick and wanted some less basic facilities.

This is a beautiful teak guesthouse in a good location in Lampang. The rooms are tastefully furnished and the veranda is very pretty. I found the service a little lacking though. We arrived at 2pm to find that our room wasn't ready and had to sit around waiting without an apology. Later when we changed rooms, the next room wasn't ready for us to move into straight away either so it would have been a nice gesture just to move the bags into the room while we were out so it was ready for us but we had to do this ourselves. These gripes aside, my lasting impression is that the service just wasn't very friendly or particularly interested in the guests.

A few things that let this place down is the weak wifi, which dips in and out a lot and also the way noise travels from room to room, we could hear everything the guests above us were doing and this woke us up a few times in the night, perhaps these guests we particularly noisy but their floor/our ceiling seemed to just amplify noise.

Food here is also quite expensive on top of the room charge so I would recommend getting breakfast outside.

Room tip: I suppose a room on the top floor so you don't hear everything other guests are up to.

The Riverside Guesthouse has the 'wow' factor - it's a series of beautiful teak houses set in a wonderful garden area. The view over the river isn't brilliant but there are plenty of other things to look at on the terrace - during the day we found it a great place to relax and unwind after travelling back from Sukhothai on a rented motorbike.

The bedroom was huge and spotlessly clean. We were very impressed by the attention to detail that had been given to decorating the room - it felt very homely.

Unfortunately we didn't have the best nights sleep but that was mainly due to other guests - definitely not the owners fault - we were kept awake at first by a group of people talking till gone midnight. Normally that wouldn't bother us but they were on the terrace close to our room - to their credit, when my partner went out and asked them to keep the noise down they did. But then the 3 guests in the room above us kept us awake for most of the night. The buildings are old, traditional teak houses and the noise travels through the floorboards so we could hear one of them snoring for most of the night and we could also hear their toilet ablutions - I'm sure you get the picture! It didn't help that they were up at 6am - we could hear everything, even the zippers closing on their luggage! Then to top it all off, the kitchen staff started prepping breakfast at 6.10am - our room (no.19) was on the ground floor next to the kitchen. We gave up - got up, showered, dressed, packed and had an earlier breakfast than planned.

My partner did speak to the owner in the morning to voice our concerns - she was hugely apologetic - it really wasn't her fault and I do want to stress to all you TA''s that the owner is extremely pleasant, helpful and understanding - she even discounted our breakfast by way of an apology.

This was our second visit to Lampang (see review of Auangkham Resort) - I'm really sorry to say that if we were to revisit Lampang, which we loved, we wouldn't return to the Riverside Guesthouse. Instead we'd go back to Auangkham Resort.

I can't give the Riverside a bad score as it was in a good location, clean, facilities were very good, the honesty box for drinks was a nice touch and the owners lovely.

We were lucky enough to get a room just from walking into the guest house after our overnight bus from Bangkok. Staff were very attentive and made the room up very quickly for us so that we didn't have to wait until afternoon to put our things down. Some staff not the friendliest or most welcoming; but the guest house itself is well appointed with nice rooms and a lovely decking area with good wifi.
