Just got back from a great trip to Kalimantan! I went with my wife and our friend from work and we stayed two nights in Banjarmasin, so we checked out the floating markets and did a canal tour. Our guide, Mukani (081351194444 and email: mukani_bmc@yahoo.com), was really awesome and I highly recommend him. He was really nice, informative and reasonably priced. We went out early in the morning, ate some good food, and got to see something that is unfortunately all too rare, community. Later that afternoon we met back up for the canal tour which I'll leave for you to experience yourself. Both were a lot of fun, and it was exciting to see some of the local culture!

The floating market was a great tour, our guide, Makani, was very helpful and kind. I recommend his services if you are in the area. We contracted Makani via Kalimantan Tour company based in Palanga Raya, as this was only a portion of our 10 day tour. IN this area we also booked a bamboo rafting tour in the mountains and this was better than expected. The only downfall of this tour was the 4 hour car ride both days, first day to the mountains to go rafting, and the return to Banjamarsin to do the floating market the following day.

We had a one day layover in Banjarmasin, the city is pleasant enough but the market was certainly the highlight and worth the early start. Our fantastic tour guide (Mukani 081351194444) organised a private and informative tour, perfect from hotel pickup to drop off.

Mention the phrase 'floating market' to the average backpacker, and they are likely to think of the highly touristic and commercialized ones in the canals around Bangkok. These are now continued almost exclusively for the bus tour groups which come in here and pay too much for everything they buy. Travelers with pretensions to street-cred are likely to roll their eyes at such a spectacle.

Contrast these tacky Thai markets diversions with Pasar Terapung then. This Banjar floating market takes place every morning at the confluence of two rivers on the outskirts of Banjarmasin, the capital of South Kalimantan. You will see local women wearing 'tangoey', some kind of woven local sombrero, which shade their complexions while plying vegetables and homewares from their canoes. Seeing how you have rented a sampan to come out here, you might as well buy something, and anything from local drinks to fresh fruit and veg and even desserts are available. The whole thing is wonderfully photogenic and makes for a very engaging early morning boat ride.
