“Such an amazing, restful stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 April 2012

My husband and I had such a great time at Japamala. It wasn't action packed and full of exciting adventure jungle treks, scuba diving and day-long snorkelling expeditions but instead it was peaceful, relaxed and slow paced. Just what we were after. But, if you wanted more adventure, you could do that too (for a price!).
The staff are wonderful, the food was always delicious (and the cocktails!), the beach is stunning and the accommodation was simplified luxury. We cannot wait to go back. If you're expecting a Four Seasons type of resort, you'll be dissapointed. Rather than the 'over the top' luxury, there is something more authentic and rustic about the place.
They have only 13 "nests" so you wont have to battle the crowds at breakfast altough you might have a fight on your hands for one of the beach side cabanas. And that was a downside to the beach experience. Only 3 cabanas. But, they are building a new pool on the other side of the peer with 4 more cabanas. The sun gets quite fierce and uncomfortable in the afternoons so the cabanas as a lovely respite for those lucky few.
If you're looking for seclusion, serenity and relaxation in a beautiful setting, Japamala is the place for you.

Room Tip: Book early to get the "nest" you want. Be mindful of the room you choose if you have mobil...

Japamala is peace. There is literally nothing to do but relax and eat - and luckily the food at both restaurants is amazing! We particularly loved the Italian out on the very romantic pier.

You need to understand that there are no attractions and not even any walks nearby!

Our tip is to definitely book a room with your own plunge pool, we stayed in a tree-top chalet. The beach itself isn't great, there was unfortunately an oil spill while we were there and a lot of rubbish on the beach. Also there are only 3 sunbeds which get taken early and then get hogged the whole day (people just leave their book or towel on the chairs and then disappear for hours! So the staff do need to address this). Hence the plunge pool is essential!

The staff were all lovely, especially the waiters.

All in all, Japamala would be perfect for a romantic long weekend.

We just came back from Japamala today and felt I should write something for this service orientated place.

The trip started when I was looking for a place for my wife and I before having a baby. Originally I was looking at Berjaya Resort but after my friend told me about Japamala, I went and did my research. The reviews are exactly how the place is like. Friendly staffs, excellent food, ideal place for serenity and well priced (probably not that great for locals).

We took a coach from Singapore to Mersing and transfer to the Blue Water Ferry which was recommended by a lot of people. The trip there was kind of hassle free but the ferry took nearly an hour just to get itself out of the Mersing jetty. Upon our arrival at Genting jetty, the speedboat of Japamala is already waiting for us and the overall trip was pleasant.
When we reach Japamala, we were greeted by the friendly staff and were shown to our rooms. I swear they must be one of the best hospitality staffs I’ve met. We were shown to our room and its exactly how it looks on the photos online. Even though we didn’t get room 16 (seacliff), all the seacliff chalets have a good view of the jetty and sunset.

We only eat at the jetty as my wife doesn’t like Thai food that much. I am very impressed with the quality and price of food there. Pizza is a must try there and so are the king prawns. Meals there are around 60RM per person (including drink) if anyone is budgeting for the trip.
Snorkling is great and make sure you venture below the jetty and the opposite site of the resort to see what the whole area. I see fishes that I don’t see in front of the resort below the jetty and also on the opposite side. Some long fish that swim on the surface of the sea, puffer fish and turtle are some I saw on the other side.

The toilet behind the Thai restaurant has a fruit tree which bears lotsa fruits when we were there and you can see plenty of squirrels and some monkeys around too. What I do regret not doing is to kayak out to neighboring beaches and snorkel there too. As mentioned on the website, both kayaking and snorkeling are complimentary from the resort.

We did a couple of massages and the therapists are pretty good even though the best and cheapest I’ve had is in China. Price is around 200RM per hour.

Please take the price I’ve quoted as a guide for budget only and they are indicative. The price is subjective and depends on individual too. I hope this will give everyone an idea on how much it will cost roughly as I cannot find any pricing online.

Overall we had a pleasant stay and definitely will recommend to everyone!

Room Tip: Room 16 if its possible but can be hard due to the high demand.

Not fancy or classy - just cool - the right place you are looking for when you want to wind down, relax and mind your own business for a few days.
Two excellent restaurants - Italian food and Thai food - what more can you ask for?
Staff had just the right attitude to it all - relaxed but alert! Recommend to all who expect a calm and relaxed vacation with company of your loved one(s), a book and snorkel.
And don´t worry about the weather - it will be fine!

Stayed here for our mini honeymoon at one of the tree top chalets. Views were great, food was great (green curry chicken was scrumptious - one of the best ever i have tasted in my entire life), beach was awesome, loved the afternoon snacks as well.

Boat ride to / from Jetty was pretty costly if you ask me.

Good place to relax with your loved one.

Myself and my Husband were lucky enough to spend 12 wonderful nights at this beautiful resort.
From the moment we arrived we knew we had made a great choice. We had a very long journey, from Singapore by taxi and then the ferry from Mersing and were delighted to find that the resort boat was already waiting for us at Genting.
The greeting we received when we arrived at Japamala was amazing, happy smiling faces all around and all the staff were just so helpful.
After a delicious lemon grass drink we were on our way to our amazing Treetop chalet. We couldn't believe our eyes as we were taken through the pathways and stairs up through the jungle, our chalet was gorgeous, and the view was wonderful.

We spent everyday on the beach, just totally relaxed. The wildlife we saw blew us away, everything from monkeys, Monitor Lizards, and snakes. The wonderful dragonflies and butterflies the whole resort is a nature lovers paradise.

Both restaurants are fantastic, but our favourite was the Mandi Mandi, such a fantastic setting and so laid back. Wonderful food, and unlike other reviews we found that there was plenty of choice to see us through our 12 nights.!!!!
We tried most of the cocktails (well it would have been rude not too)!!! My favourite was the Thai fire Cracker!! mouth watering.

Breakfasts were ample and the choice of juices was first class. And more importantly all the meals we had were served with a smile. All the lovely staff were so attentive but also knew when to hold back, so we never felt we were being overcrowded, so important and at Japamala they have got it just right.

Returning to our Chalet every night was so lovely. The bed was always turned down, candles and an oil burner were lit and chocolates and small messages were left for us. So thoughtful.
We slept like babies.!!!

Our only regret is that we feel we did not do the rest of Tioman justice as we did not leave the resort at all. But we will save this for our next trip to Japamala.

To sum up, this wonderful resort is truly magical. We were so relaxed and chilled out we really felt that we actually recharged our batteries. We have promised ourselves that we will return again in the next couple of years. I can't wait.
"Thank you Japamala for showing us a little bit on Heaven on Earth.!!!"

Me and my husband (then bf) went to Japamala over 2010 Xmas holiday which fell during the monsoon season. The resort was tucked away from the rest of the chalets on Tioman Island. Their feeder boat picked us up from the main jetty and arrived 10 minutes later. Things i love most about the resort are, the utmost privacy it offers for couples, attentive staffs, scrumptious breakfast and the jetty aka floating bar (you could dive right into the sea from here). Not really a baby and kids friendly resort as the pool is small and not much indoor kids recreational activities offered.
This resort is under Relais Chateaux group so those who are frequent world traveller would know what to expect. The concept is that of a small boutique resort set in a tropical rainforest with a romantic off the beaten path ambience, perfect for spousal quiet time together. So please leave your kids at home if u plan to come here.
We got to stay at 2 different rooms (own choice), our first night was at the sea cliff perched up high on a cliff with an amazing view. Second night was in jungle luxe sarang amidst the dense forest with monkeys hanging out at your balcony. I was pleasantly surprised to see the cozy and nice interior for both rooms. No complains about the room.
Would i come here again? Yes. But definitely not during monsoon season. We stayed for 2 nights, the day we were leaving, it rained non stop from dawn and the water was sooooo choppy. I had a nightmarish time in the small feeder boat to the main jetty, our boat was rocking so bad it felt as though it could topple anytime, and the time taken from main jetty to Mersing was doubled because even the open sea water was very very choppy the ferry had to travel at a snail's space. I didnt enjoy that.
