I stayed here with 11 other photographers for the Mt. Hagen Sing Sing two weeks ago. We were stuck in this place for 6 nights. I had a newer, remodeled room which had roaches all over it and water that was sometimes turned off, often when I wanted to take a shower. The roaches extended to the breakfast buffet. Fellow travels in my group had rats in their rooms. Beyond this the staff has little understanding or training of customer service. Expect up to two and a half hour waits after ordering dinner and no other options in sight. Sadly this is the trade off to staying in mt. Hagen, there are few options and the location of this hotel is ideal for the show. Expect to pay a lot for one of the most underwhelming stays of your life.

I stayed at the Highlander hotel apartments for 6 months because I was working long term in Mt Hagen. The apartment was comfortable and well serviced and kept clean by the staff daily. Apart from the occasional issue with water shortages (which sounds a little odd given how much it rains in Mt Hagen) the apartment accommodation was adequate, comfortable and most importantly very secure. Over all the Hotel facilities are good. Restaurant food is also good, great bar with a nice fire place which makes for a super atmosphere! Staff were above all always courteous and friendly and always willing to listen even if I had a few minor complaints. As a long term guest staff got to know me on first name terms and always willing to assist. Restaurant staff probably need to be a little more organised on times and service can be a bit slow, but because the food is so good its well worth waiting for! And service always comes with a big smile and the occasional humble apology if service is delayed. Overall the Hotel is clean, fairly modern and extremely comfortable.

Room Tip: Apartments or recently built rooms

Been visiting the Higlander Hotel many times over the past 25 years.
It is good to see major works progressing to expand and enhance the hotel offer.
The management and staff it seems battle daily to maintain a good standard for guests.
With constant power outages, water outages, public unrest during elections, effecting staff turnouts on a daily basis, disrupting supplies to the kitchen and other areas of the hotel it has to be admired the effort.
Mt Hagen Show increased the pressure but it was nice to see so many overseas guests enjoying themselves, and in the most accept the negatives as part of the experience.
Seeing the staff constantly smiling, and doing there best for these important tourists was the highlight.
Looking forward to seeing the changes in the coming months.
Highlander Hotel, best in Mt Hagen and putting more distance between the competition too.
Coral Seas needs to put back up water tanks in, to ensure all is being done for the guests when water is off.

I stayed here for what seemed like a dog year but was actually only 4 nights while attending the Mount Hagen Sing Sing and trying to escape with not luck thanks to PNG national airline (for another review). The electricity in Mount Hagen is unreliable so it shut off and the generator for the hotel kicked on several times a day. Free 'wifi' but router appeared not to connected to the internet most of the time. Highly recommend a SIM card and buying data package before you arrive. I gave this place 2 stars only because there is not a better place to stay.

Location: It is centrally located in town and about 1 km from the Hagen Sing Sing grounds. The place has a tall electric fence around it to keep out the unwanted. Appeared to be AC and not DC electric fence which tells you something. Full time security at the gate.

Grounds: From the lobby, the main restaurant area and some small shops and bar are within a short walking distance. A new outdoor seating area adjacent to the pool was unveiled during my stay so plywood barricades finally came down. Rooms are located on second floor above the lobby (600 room) and within court yards (cell blocks 200s and 300s) in the rest of the place. Grounds were fine but hotel was undergoing a remodel project so construction crews and noise was everywhere.

Room: I unfortunately did not get one of the remodeled rooms. It was adequate with a bed, sheets, mini fridge, hot water heater for tea/coffee, ironing board/iron, small flat screen TV, couple towels and my daily ration of two bottle of water but nothing special (unless you want to count the large dead roach on the floor). Water pressure in shower was OK if you avoided peak times.

Food/Drink: Pizza was OK and buffet improved significantly once the crowd for the Sing Sing arrived and the place was full. Drinks were all over priced by not just PNG standards but almost anywhere in the world. Other than the bar, getting a drink meant going to the cooler and waiting or someone to notice you. Bartender was a gem.

Service/Staff: Friendly but not well trained and I got the sense they go through several staff on a regular basis. Manager in the restaurant was particularly useless when confronted with a lost dinner ticket after wait 1 hour and 40 minutes for food. His response, we will start cooking it now, no apology. Cleaning staff, bartender and bellmen were a pleasure to speak with and very responsive to any request.

OK, so I ask several people who had frequented Mount Hagen if there was a better place and they all said no. Maybe once the rooms are renovated it will be better. But until then, just know, this is the best Mount Hagen has to offer (for now).

Would I stay there again? Of course, since there are really no other options.

Room Tip: ONLY way to get a decent room is the demand a newly remodeled room.
