“Very Close To Perfection”
Reviewed 29 October 2011

After a long miserable drive through Albania, my wife and I were mentally and physically drained. What a great welcome the Astoria was. This was as close to a five star experience that I have seen in Eastern Europe. The location just inside the old town was superb - the rooms were clean, comfortable and inviting - the hotel staff (bilingual) could not be nicer and more accommodating - and breakfast (made to order) on the beach was the perfect way to start the day. In addition, the town of Budva was a real charmer. If you are in the area, do yourself a favor and stay here.

Very modern luxurious hotel built into the walls of the old City with easy access to the beach and with a romantic terrace restaurant. The rooms are crisp with all the designer touches. A very decadent bathroom with ample space throughout. One drawback is there is only one room in the hotel I believe (and it is very expensive) with a view. But the restaurant is fabulous for a romantic evening. Some of the best food on our 45 day trip. The small pebble beach is furnished with umbrellas and lounge chairs and is a great place to cool off. This is not a cheap hotel but a good place to splurge.

Room Tip: Get a standard suite unless you want to go for the view.

Just inside the walls of the old town in Budva, the Hotel Astoria is a wondreful option for a stay in this charming city. The hotel is excellent. Our "room" was actually a two room suite with a comfortable and spacious lounge area, a separate bedroom and a nice bathroom with ocean view from the main rooms. There were flat screens in each room, separate heat/ac systems and comfortable furniture and far more space than one might expect for a hotel in the middle of a historic zone. The location inside the historic town means there's no parking at the hotel itself, but parking is available starting at 15-16 Euro per day approximately 100 meters away. Breakfast was included and could be eaten on the hotel's beach, just outside the city walls or in the hotel restaurant. Service was friendly and the hours ran from 7-11am. The restaurant had a wide variety of items for lunch and dinner and everything we tried was good. Hotel staff were friendly and helpful.

We had high hopes for the Astoria - especially when we managed to get a deal of an upgrade at a promotional rate. Our room was smart but not smart enough to justify the (discounted) E180 per night. We were also surprised at the E22 a day parking cost which was an unexpected additional cost. The hotel building is attractive and characterful and the interior modern and stylish. The roof top restaurant looked lovely - romantic, great views etc but the menu was disappointing - very generic, standard stuff. It even had pictures of each dish. It is nice to have so many options of where to eat - beach, terrace, roof and the breakfast is pretty good. The reception staff were very friendly but the same couldn't be said for some of the other staff, especially the cafe/bar staff. All in all a hotel with potential but they didn't quite pull it off and as a result it wasn't great value for money.

My husband and I stayed here for two nights on our honeymoon and were loved this hotel. Our room had a great view of the cobblestone streets and our one bedroom room was HUGE! It felt like an apartment and was so spacious for such a small boutique hotel. We had dinner on the rooftop and it was the best meal we had in Budva. Our server recommended this AMAZING local red wine - we indulged in two bottles :) Breakfast every morning on the beach and lounging during the day at the private beach was just what we needed after a hectic wedding week!

Hotel Astoria is perfectly situated in the Old Town of Budva. We found the staff to be extremely helpful in all our interactions with them. The rooms are lovely, with funky, modern decor. The housekeeping service is excellent and they make sure you have plenty of towels!

A few not-so-spectacular aspects:

The hotel bills their rooftop restaurant as an outstanding dining experience. While the view is incredible and it quite a nice atmosphere, the food was fairly forgettable. It was also very windy when we were there, and the votive candles on the table wouldn't stay lit, meaning we ate in almost complete darkness. This detracted from the experience. I would suggest some hurricane candle holders.

The food in general leaves something to be desired. Even the drinks were hit or miss.

The private beach is very convenient, however the hotel blasts house music all afternoon, which competes with the neighboring hotel's loud techno music and overall does not create a very relaxing atmosphere for sunbathing.

The hotel does not have an elevator, which isn't a huge issue as there are only a couple floors. However, having recently undergone ACL repair surgery, it was a bit difficult for me to get to and from our room on the 2nd floor. Just something to be aware of for those with mobility issues.

If I were traveling to Montenegro again, I would consider the Hotel Astoria, but I would also have a closer look at some of the other hotels in the area before deciding.

This is a very clean and comfortable three star hotel in a great location just inside the old city walls of Budva. The hotel offers a very good breakfast. There is bar service on the beach which is right in front of the hotel. The staff in this hotel are absolutely wonderful. There is a very good restaurant on the third floor which has good views and we enjoyed the food and the atmosphere very much. There is one downside and that is the boom boom boom of music on the beach. You know the kind of music that two decades of young people have had to endure. There is another beach five minutes walk from the hotel which is much
quieter. The music starts at 12pm and ends around 8pm and didn't affect our room.
