“FaFa away”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 April 2012

We stayed here for three days after sailing around Vava'u. The island resort was wonderful. While not over manicured polish of say Fiji's islands it had great food, charming cottages or Fales and truly good service. We loved the outdoor showers which I think are a must in the tropics . The Fales were incredibly well design and the personel area they provided meant we could all relax reading or playing cricket or bocce. We we head back for a relaxing stay anytime. For others, it not the sort of place to go if you want action and night life but for a quite few days in a beautiful island setting with good food, it is ideal.

Room Tip: Get a Fale with an outdoor bathroom

We stayed here over Easter 2012 and throughly enjoyed it, we had an upgraded fale, which in hindsight we didn't need as it seems like it's just bigger with an extra room that was unused, the meals at the restaurant although limited in choice were all without exception first rate quality, and there is no problem with that. The staff are lovely and it is a very relaxing place. I would highly reccomend to those who want to go and totally lax out.Unfortuneatly for my partner and I, I don't think we would go back. only for the fact it is too hard for us to go without airconditioning, nights were incredibly uncomfortable with just a slow moving fan, very high up in the lounge part of the fale.If you can get past the heat, it is a dream.

Fafa Island is picture perfect. My husband and I spent four nights there as part of our honeymoon and loved it. The fales are stunning, hand made from coconut trees (we got to see some of the construction) with so many options for lounging about - hammock, swing, deck chairs... They are luxurious without being sterile. We loved the outdoor bathroom!

Just remember, when you visit, you need to make your own fun. If you enjoy relaxing, then this will be heaven for you! There's not a lot going on besides snorkelling or kayaking, making friends with the wildlife and eating. Speaking of which, the food was a bit too expensive (when I booked I thought there was a daily rate for food - I was wrong) and repetitive, which is only to be expected when you dine at the same restaurant over and over.

My tip would be make friends with the staff! They are fabulous locals living on the island and have a wicked sense of humour. If you make friends with them, they will help give you the best experience possible and go out of their way for you.

There are enough reviews which describe how great the island is and how perfect the fale's are (which I completely agree with).....

We stayed here for 5 days (4 nights), and the stay was exactly what we wanted - peaceful and relaxing. I think its important to keep this in mind when booking, as the island is not really suited for any other type of holiday.

1. Food - excellent quality and quantity. Price is what you would expect dining at a restaurant - and the quality matches! Simply be aware this is what is available and make sure you have budgeted for this. Our food and drink cost (2 people) was approx $200TGN per day.

2. Beach - largely disappears on high tide, however high tide is best for kayaking and snorkeling. Some really nice coral around the island. Earlier reviews commented on good snorkeling gear, but I wished I had brought my own (gear was just ok, and we were there during Easter and so gear was in demand as resort was full).

3. Massage - professional and relaxing

4. Mozzies - they are there but not so bad. bring some light long sleeves and trousers for the night-time and some anti-histamine cream for the ones that get through.

5. Location - west side is out of the view of the restaurant so a bit more private. North gets all day sun (if you can stand it).

6. There is a decent library on the island - so don't worry about packing too many books.

7. Airport to island is >1hr.

8. WIFI at restaurant is very useful

You really feel adequately disconnected with the world at fafa, which is great considering how easy it is to get to! Thoroughly recommend to anyone looking for relaxation.

We just spend 6 days on the island, it is truly a very relaxing place, great snorkeling just off the beach heaps of fish and good coral. The accomadation is nice, but better lighting would help for reading etc at night. The open air shower is great gives the feeling of showering outdoors. All accomadation has direct access to a great beach but it seems private due to trees etc. The only thing that lets the resort down is the cost of food and drinks, if the food had been off a higher standard then maybe these costs could be justified, however the meals were limited in choice and of a standard that you would expect at a cheap dinner. Maybe greater use of fresh local fruit and vegetables would help by either improving the quality of decreaseing the cost. Drinks were overpriced $26 for a cocktail (before 15% tax) is not justified and $42 for a bottle of wine that sells for $9 in the supermarket in NZ..it was not great wine. I belive that the hobie cat should have been available for guest for free as part of the accomadation costs.. like other island resorts that I have stayed at, however it looked like the cat had not been used for sometime, maybe this would alert the managerment to a problem. The kayaks, and snorkling were free and of a quite good standard. Once on the island the ability to travel back to the main island for free was a good point. Overall The island is very clean and, nice and tidy.

We recently visited the island for the day. We were very amazed with the beauty of the place. Very clean and beautiful furnishings and decoration.
We left the island with mixed feelings as indeed the place is amazing, however we didn't feel the price $140 paanga ( for 2 ppl) reflected what we received. The day trip suggests it includes lunch , however on arrival there were some items that didn't include dessert and it our lunch was on the small side. A free juice or water would have been lovely to go with the lunch but it was all extra, We also had to pay extra for the snorkeling hire, whereas the other island offered them for free.
Service was a bit poor, lacking in enthusiasm and the typical Tongan charisma.
On departure we greeted the owner good bye and he didn't reply to us or acknowledged our visit for the day. Which we felt was a bit rude, We rate the island for what it looks like , but don't rate the day trip , a nearer island offers similar views and much friendlier service and a more authentic feel to the place.

Beautifully designed 'fale' situated on a spectacular white sandy beach Island. We've never seen anything quite like this here and is the one place we will definitely take family and friends to. The staff are extremely friendly and food is great!

Kayaks and snorkeling gear are available and free to use. The water is pristine, no coral, and sand so powdery white. No signs of roaches or spiders. The Island is immaculate.

It is truly an amazing place and I'm really impressed. I wish that the mainland looked more like this, traditional and spectacular.

Room Tip: There are only two types of fale, Superior and Deluxe (with the exception of a Honeymoon suite). We...
