“the restaurant is nothing special”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 January 2012

If you plan to go on vacation to Amanwella Hotel in Tangalle, it means that you have the budget to afford it and you deserve perfection.
We vited the place beginning of January 2 times just to have a drink at the bar, and one time for dinner. So we do not judge the hotel.
What we got was, one of the most amazing views, a fantastic dramatic architecture inspired by the genius of Bawa in its special tropical modernist style.
Very nice waiters, but the service was much too long, we had to ask the bill for about half an hour, they could not provide a mosquito repellent (we where literally attacked, mosquitos are democratic and don't care about the place).
The list of wine was poor (the italian wine was of a rather low quality, we are italian and we know), the menu was lacking in fish, and what we got was really so so.
We had much better food on the simple shacks on the beach, with all sort of fishes, including lobsters.
You may run into a pop star or an hollywood actress, if you care about it. We don't.
My advice if you are in the area is to go there to have a drink for sunset. Enjoy the view, and go elsewhere for dinner.

Not very expensive.

An extremely well run group of 28 gorgeous suites overlooking a fabulous golden, private beach. Amanwella stands out for its friendly, relaxed atmosphere and immaculate attention to detail. Swimming in the sea or the affinity pool, food and drink when you want it, no fuss just a luxurious break.

Room Tip: Ocean suites have a direct view of the bay, but the views are good further up too.

Amanwella is a wonderful place to stay and laze around, with impeccable Aman service and style. We had an ocean suite, with a superb view and the whole place is geared for relaxing. I'd say that adding a gym would be an improvement, but Amanwella has a magnificant swimming pool and I didn't find the energy to use it so probably wouldn't have used a gym either I suppose. Some more discernment around the wine list selection would be very welcome - I'm not talking about price here, but about the quality of some of the wines on offer. This is a common problem with the top resorts in Asia, probably reflecting too much influence of local wine distributors and surely can be fixed.

Room Tip: Pay a little more and get an ocean suite.

This was by far one of the most disappointing Aman properties I have ever been to and I've been fortunate to be at many. Pietro was a terrible hotel manager and the food was disgusting for a 5 star hotel, or whats supposed to be a 5 star hotel. Just being honest.

This hotel is a MUST, if planning a trip to Sri Lanka. Pietro and his team offer impeccable service and attention to every detail. The beach is breathtaking. I highly recommend taking a yoga class with their in-house yogi, Michael Lear. He's the real deal. Unfortunately, the property doesn't have a gym.

Outstanding architecture on a magnificent private beach and great rooms although the plunge pool location does not make much sense as it is cooped up at the entrance of the suite which is not beach facing and not very private. The staff was very friendly and attentive. The attention to detail on service at arrival and departure was great. The only real disappointment was the food menu. We were expecting a bit more variety and innovation on a $700 a-night hotel.

After realising that one night was definitely enough in the Tea Factory region - and unable to change our other hotel bookings - we stumbled across Amanwella online and booked for one night.
It was one of the best nights of our three week honeymoon and wished we could have stayed there for longer.
What an utterly fantastic beautiful wonderful INCREDIBLE hotel. As others have mentioned it truly is a hidden paradise. despite having only booked our room that morning we we welcomed so warmly when we arrived in the afternoon. We were upgraded to a beach villa and it was utterly exquisite. you must have a look at the website for photos. The rooms were huge with a large balcony overlooking the wonderful indian ocean and an incredible private beach. the food was perfect - utterly delicious, and the service just fantastic.
we spent the morning on the coconut grove on the beach and it was blissful. Without any prompting we were kept hydrated with water (complimentary) after about an hour and a half of lazing in the warm weather they brought us lemon sorbet. About another 90mins later they brought us pinapple smoothie. just amazing attention to detail. when we (rather tearily) left they gave us a bag with water for the journey.

Yes, it is expensive, but worth every penny. You must stay here if you can. We'll definitely try and return soon
