My family stayed at Red Frog for two weeks and absolutely loved it. This was our second trip to the island and just had to write a review this time. There are so many things to do. We body surfed at Red Frog, took a jungle walk, hiked the beaches and picked huge conch shells, kayaked, snorkeled, rode the incredible zip line over the jungle floor, took day trips to many wonderful beaches and just hung out by the infinity pool overlooking the beach. The wildlife was great....we saw a sloth hanging in the tree just off our porch, monkeys in the jungle, a manta ray, and numerous beautiful birds.
The villas are first class with all of the amenities. A great place to unwind after a day of adventure. The weather was great...bring lots of sun screen!
Kayoukos is great place to hang out and play pool or ping pong or to grab a bite to eat. When we were there they had an excellent Red Snapper and a delicious Easter brunch. Punta Lava is another restaurant at Red Frog and the food there was also excellent.
The resort staff was attentive and very friendly. We had a blast getting to know them.
I see why there motto is adventure by day and luxury by night. We have been to several places in the Caribbean/Virgin Islands and can't wait to get to Red Frog.

For our second stay at Red Frog, we rented Villa #13 for an entire month. This villa is located in the Los Altos part of the resort and commands extraordinary views of the Caribbean and several small cays off shore. The villa was superbly furnished and included a beautiful infinity pool in whiich you could "disappear" into the sea on the horizon. The villa host, Enrique, was extremely helpful in every respect. The entire operation, even while the resort is completing construction of Phase I, is run very smoothly. The service at the resort's eateries, Kayukos and Punta Lava, is excellent allowing for the slower pace and Caribbean vibe. (SHOUT OUT to Rafael, Miquel and Angelo!!!) The weekly dinners, hosted by Pauldi and the guest chef, were delicious and of great value for the money. Needless to say, the beaches are among the most beautiful in the world, some of them are entirely deserted. Slogging through the muddy paths in the surrounding jungle, while not for everyone, brings you closer to the reality of the undisturbed rain forrest and the local critters....every day brought a new insect and a new sort of jungle plant or flower. As there are no cars, recommend rental of a golf cart for at least part of any long stay. Since the province of Bocas del Toros is an archipeligo, getting in and out of boats is a constant if you want to travel between the various islands. The boat captains are very helpful and will, with prior arrangement, take you anywhere in in the archipeligo.....I recommend a trip to Los Cayos Zapatillos. For our next trip, we'll be buying a jungle lodge within the Red Frog resort......this place is THAT beautifu!

Room Tip: Villas in Los Altos provide a nicer view, while villas in Los Bajos provide quicker and easier acces...

Our vacation at Red Frog Beach Resort was great! My husband, and three kids (ages 12,8 and 6) stayed in a villa that was elegant, comfortable and clean. The view from our balcony and pool area was amazing. The pool was lovely and my kids never wanted to get out unless we were going to the beach!
Turtle Beach was stunningly beautiful and often we were the only people there. The waves were fun for body surfing and the water was clear and warm.
We took the kids for a jungle hike and had an adventure looking for red frogs, sloths and many interesting insects. It was hot and muggy in the depth of the jungle, but there was a pleasant breeze once we returned to our villa.
The zip line canopy tour was one of the many highlight of this trip. Do not miss it! All of the kids went on the zip line and loved it! The "Fly the Sky" staff was great and really helped the kids feel comfortable and safe.
The catamaran sunset cruise was beautiful and relaxing. The dolfins seem to come right on cue as the sun was setting. Our kids loved it!
We ate most of our meals at the villa, but had lunch one day at Punta Lava. The burgers and nachos were good and the rum punch was delicious! We also had dinner one night in Bocas at Refugio and it was excellent.
I can't say enough about how beautiful this area is and how much we enjoyed our stay. The staff was wonderful, friendly and helpful. Red Frog Beach Resort is the perfect mix of luxury and adventure! We definitely will return.

What a wonderful stay we had in Red Frog, villa # 54 slept 2 couples had the perfect pool to cool off in with a nice jungle/garden view and part of an ocean view. People on the island were friendly and always ready to help. There is lots to do and see on Red Frog we could have stayed another week easy. Our villa was beautiful inside and outside. Everything you needed was right there. I would recommend Red Frog and any of the Villas to rent to vacationers heading that direction. The golf carts were fun, roads a bit bumpy but that was part of the experience for us. We will be back for sure one day. Thank you to everyone that helped us out with our stay there and thank you Katie for your quick response and for watching over us with the tip on the airlines. You helped our stay go smoothly.

My wife and one other couple just left Red Frog Beach Resort after 4 days of fantastic fun and relaxing.
I've read the few negative reviews and my reply is if you want a 5 star all-inclusive resort then you should stay on the Pacific side close to Panama City........but if you want a 5 star villa in the middle of a lush jungle, great beaches, an adventure getting there and many more adventures around every corner then Red Frog is for you.
After ferrying over from the mainland to Bocus Town and experiencing the third world chaos of where do I go, where’s the water taxi to Red Frog, what is that smell, hold on to your belongings (don’t get me wrong those are all good things to experience) we were holding our breath wondering what we would find at Red Frog.
Keep in mind this is an island that is only accessible by water taxi, everything you see is or was brought over by boat or barge.
The villas are 5 star, marble floors, granite countertops, step in showers, full kitchen with stainless steel appliances and small plunge pool at each villa. You’ll need to rent a golf cart because the roads are rough gravel and in some cases the villas are 1/3 mile from the beach. The views are fantastic but yes there are a few villas that are incomplete and a minor eyesore.
The food at the two restaurants on site is ok but not great, more like good beach food than gourmet food. Keep in mind at any one time there are most likely only 25 couples in the resort so having a 5 star restaurant is'nt really an option. However they do offer a Wednesday and Saturday night reservation only dinner that we did, those I would rate as very good.
We are adventuresome so we did some beach and jungle walks looking for wildlife. We saw parrots, Red Frogs (hard to find since they are about ½ the size of a dime), monkeys, sloths, and on our last day a 8 foot long Boa Constrictor.
If you want 5 star services then this isn’t your bag of tea. If you want to experience the local culture, swim at a great beach, take water taxis to nearby islands for the day, see wildlife, snorkel at great locations and then spend the night in 5 star luxury then this is the place for you!

Room Tip: We stayed in villa 54, 2 bedrooms. Great location and good views. There is a unfinished villa next t...

Pluses

-Beautiful
-Friendly staff
-Rented two bedroom home w/pool was very nice
-Beautiful beach
-Excellent beach bar with friendly bar tender. Left my wallet on the bar one evening. He kept it safe until I returned the next morning
-Catamaran sunset dinner cruise with David Green & wife, Elizabeth, was great fun
-Canopy zip line was a lot of fun. Take the bypass option they will offer you at the second or third platform if you are not up to the challenge of a semi-obstacle course to reach the following platforms (repelling, suspended bamboo pole bridge, loosely suspended slatted board bridge, sagging rope bridge). All fun, safe, but will be scary to those afraid of heights.
- Water taxi service is good but be prepared to get wet if it's raining. Hey, it's the tropics.

Minuses

-Don't leave anything unattended on the beach
-Hang on tight to handbags and shopping bags if you spend time in the nearby town. Witnessed a street robbery where a bag was snatched from the shoulder of a young guy. He and a friend unsuccessfully gave chase. The locals cheered the thief. Spoke with another couple who stayed in a hotel in the town. Their room was cleaned out, dirty laundry and all, while they were out of the room. The hotel manager would not even call the police.
-A golf cart is a must at the resort
-Not much to do unless you travel to some of the other islands
-Surf at beach is pretty rough. Good for surfers.
-Food is very bland. We have found this to be common in many Central American countries.
-Take bug spray if prone to bites though they do regularly fog the resort for bugs. Hey, it's the tropics.

Dear Mike:

Thanks again for coming. We enjoyed having you here.

For the benefit of those reading this review it is important to note that the robbery scene mentioned happened in Bocas town. Red Frog Beach is a very safe environment and it is an ideal place to stay if you have any concern about safety in Central America.

Also, keep in mind that the surf swells vary throughout the year. You mentioned big surf swells in your review; if you were to come back two months later you would hardly see a wave at all (beaches become crystal clear gorgeous).

Finally, your comment about nothing to do at Red Frog Beach - We respectfully disagree! There are few places in Bocas (or Panama for that matter) than can offer the amount of tours and activities found here. Between the 5 beaches on Isla Bastimentos and all the Rainforest you can access just about anything you want to do: zipline canopy tour (a must!), hike, explore, catamaran sailing tour, two restaurants, private chef dinners, massage, yoga, beach dinners, snorkel, cave tour, bird watching and access all the tours offered throughout Bocas del Toro. Just visit our Activity Center desk once you arrive and plan your adventure. If you like adventure, beautiful beaches and abundant rainforest - you will not be disappointed staying at Red Frog Beach.

Thanks again for coming - We appreciate our guests!

The villas themselves are nice but the vibe of the resort as a whole is a bit odd. The villas seem to belong in an upscale, first class resort, but the resort itself is not first class, due, I believe to the conflict between the developers and the construction workers. We learned from people at the resort that there had been a strike a while back, causing the construction to come to a stand still, leaving many villas unfinished, left to rot and fall apart, as well as a lack of landscaping through out the property. Golf carts are used to get around the property, which would be fine if all the roads were finished with “pavers” as it appears was the original intent. Most however are very rough and rocky. They do charge for excess electricity use however we stayed a week and charged a cart the whole time and did not go over the allotted usage. I am pretty adventurous when it comes to food, however the food is seriously lacking!. One restaurant has more of a snack bar feel, maybe catering to the hostel crowd more than villa renters. We stayed for a full week and after trying both dining options at red frog ate in Bocas town the rest of the trip. I would not recommend staying on Bastimentos Island for an entire week. The beaches on the island are worth a visit, but I think there are other cool islands to see and Bocas town has some nice places to stay as well, plus the water taxi gets expensive. We had issues with our villa when we first arrived, the cable did not work and we wanted to watch the super bowl, however we arrived on Thursday and they had us in a new villa by sat afternoon, and gave us four free zip line passes for the trouble. The zip line here is amazing, blew away the one we did in Costa Rica! Although they try to make you wear a plastic bracelet when you are staying in the villas, We took them off right away and it did not seem to matter. We paid 13 us dollars a person each way for transportation to and from the resort. This is about double what it cost to simply get a cab and boat on your own. To avoid disappointment, on the Red Frog web page it should be made clear that though the villas are quite nice, the resort seems geared more towards the backpacker and adventure traveler.

Room Tip: they seemed to have developed the villas closer to beach first therefore they do not have as many un...

Dear Guest:
Thank you for coming and your feedback is important to us.
There have been many changes and improvements at Red Frog Beach since your review. Everything has been improved from the zipline, food menus and options as well as the amount of activities to enjoy.
I believe the odd vibe you experienced was that the resort was that it was not yet finished. If you were to come back now you would see how beautiful the grounds are. There was a labor strike a long time ago (2008) along with the resort being taken over by new owners who significantly downsized the project and emphasized natural amenities like ziplines and nature paths rather than a golf course. The new ownership believes we have a very talented group of diligent Panamanian workers who add to our guests experience staying in Bocas del Toro.
Many of our guests feel that they are able to save money by staying their full week on Bastimentos. Since there are so many natural amenities here you can limit the amount of water taxi rides you would need to pay for to get to a beach if you were staying in Bocas Town for instance (i.e. there is not beach in Bocas Town). There are more dining options in Bocas town but hard to compare as they are very different when it comes to the kind of accommodations and the scenery you want to experience during your vacation.
We hope you will give us another chance in the future – thank you for coming and providing us feedback that we use to improve.
Thank you
