I made a big mistake by staying in Paharganj - it's basically a slum with hotels in it. The noise and pollution are worse here than elsewhere in Delhi, and it wasn't worth being central.
My room and bed were actually quite decent (3.5-star equivalent, and the only thing keeping this from being my first 1-star review), but the bathroom was disgusting, worse than any youth hostel I've stayed at. The hot water was lukewarm at best, and we had to wait 5 minutes for that. The complimentary breakfast was shoddy, and not fresh.
The staff usually made a good effort, but didn't understand travellers' needs. For example, when we asked for a rickshaw to take us to the train station, the doorman summoned one, argued with him, then sent him away because he was trying to get us a better price. We explained we were willing to pay 100 rupees ($2) to get a ride without waiting - and he refused! Typical, and frustrating.
