The Claridges New Delhi

The Claridges is a fine hotel in a good location. However, a few comments. Western tourists tend to confuse "The Claridges" in India with "Claridges" in London. One friend commented that "You will love Claridges in India. We stayed there in London - it is luxury!" Wrong. It is not the same brand. It is totally unrelated. The Claridges is a perfectly fine 4 star hotel. It is not a 5 star hotel regardless of the billing. My friends and I stayed in "Claridges Club" rooms - 3 levels up from "deluxe" rooms. They were 4 star. The hotel is badly in need of some charm. It is nondescript in every way. Everything painted beige/white. Nondescript furnishings and decor. The doorways, etc. are smudged and grimy. The marble in the baths stained. Just a
little rundown in appearance throughout. The service is satisfactory/excellent and the rooms are comfortable. However, don't expect 5 star quality or a truly memorable experience. I would rate both about average.

We had three nights here as part of a tour package, so I cannot comment on cost. The rooms were spacious and comfortable. We had one overlooking the pool and this was very nice, as a previous reviewer has said, so cannot comment on other rooms. We ate at Pickwicks and the Chinese restaurant, and were happy with both.

The only comments are firstly, location. It is in the diplomatic area, which has the advantage of being quiet and pleasant, but is not in walking distance of the major sights, nor any other eating places that we could find. Having said that, we did walk to nearby Ghandi SMITRI (virtually next door) and also to Indira Ghandi Museum (about 4 blocks).,

Secondly, watch what you sign and check that the supposedly carbonised copies do actually match! In Pickwicks, we were presented with two different dockets to sign - the top copy was folded over, which was very odd, so we looked closely and found that the duplicate copy was ours but not the top copy! So check each transaction - we found this applied over most of India anyway.

The Claridges Hotel New Delhi is a competent if somewhat forgetable hotel. Although a heritage property, the hotel rooms are big city style, and possibly a little tired. The staff are very helpful and we had a problem with our travel arrangements which they heloped us with. The hotel restaurant was expensive, but the food was good. As ever, it was irritating to stay at a good hotel and then have to pay for WiFi!! Overall, despite the flaws we enjoyed the stayed and our time in Delhi.

Stayed for two nights and was impressed by the efficient reception by the hotel's airport representative and the quick and comfortable ride to the hotel in a luxury car driven by the thoroughly professional chauffeur. After the complimentary airport pick up and a quick check in, found the room on the first floor to be comfortable and adequately furnished if not very large. Was given a room with twin beds instead of a king bed but that could probably be on account of the last minute reservation. Beds were comfortable and airconditioning effective so did manage to sleep rather well. Though the hotel was over six decades old, it doesn't show its age thanks to what must have been extensive and tasteful renovation that has managed to retain some of the hotel's obviously British heritage. Dinner and breakfast buffets at Pickwicks the lobby level all day restaurent were very good with far more western dishes than Indian ones which was a welcome change. Overall a good hotel with polite and well mannered staff. Would certainly stay here again given its great location in the heart of the city.

Room Tip: Wasn't troubled by any noise despite my room being on the first floor and overlooking an open ai...

We were guests of The Claridges for 3 nights while visiting Delhi in early February.

This is a heritage property that we were advised dates back to the 1950s. Its facade is reminiscent of a South Beach deco hotel, although with a larger footprint. Its lobby, however, is more traditional. Corridors on the room floors reminded us of some resort hotels in the Caribbean and Mexico.

It is well located in the diplomatic area and proximate by cab to many good hotels and restaurants. We did leave the property for a short walk but didn’t get too far. Crossing the street in Delhi is just too stressful.

Our room was a good size with a large balcony facing a side street. We were regularly serenaded by large numbers of green parakeets. Although comfortable, the room was a bit shabby, particularly the bathroom. Switches were grimy and there was an unpleasant smell of bacteria or urine. Turn down service was good.

The front desk was on the whole pleasant, although there was an edge to a least one male employee who was a fixture there. All other staff were most gracious.

Breakfast at Pickwick’s included a good assortment of both western and Indian dishes. It was the only hotel breakfast we had while in India that included smoked salmon. Service was lovely, but we did note that some of the table linen was soiled and, on one occasion, observed wait staff turning over a soiled placement and returning it to the table. We also ate at Dhaba and had drinks at the Vodka bar. Both are good choices.

The hotel appears to be the choice of diplomats, business people, and tourists. Although there was a constant stream of guests, there was still a serenity about the place.

Delhi was not my favorite city in India, but this hotel was not to blame. The Claridges was a decent hotel, beautifully kept and with responsive, though not always comprehending, staff. We arrived very late on a Sunday night and the pre-arranged hotel pick up was there to greet us. The airport driver was pleasant and helpful and we arrived to an easy check-in process. The rooms were a little out of the way (I was out in a new wing beyond the pool) but it was newly renovated, very clean and comfortable. The wake up call was reliable and easy to set up. Breakfast was a buffet with a nice omelet station and a variety of cereals, fruit and bread rolls. They had decent hotels on location, but getting out of the hotel compound is inconvenient and we didn't have enough time to get to know the neighborhood and feel confident about where to go.
The only negative feedback I had with this hotel was the odd responses we got from the front desk when we had to check in for our internal flights. They acted as though they had no idea what had to be done, then it took over 40 minutes for the travel desk to help us get this done. It's not an odd request and it seemed they either didn't understand or didn't want to take the time to help. Either way, it added to our stress level. What was nice was that the morning of our 7am flight they had the car ready and a breakfast box set for both of us which was very nice. Overall, a good stay, but the Taj seemed a more luxurious facility in a better location.

Room Tip: Ask for a pool-facing room. It's quiet and a beautiful view to wake up to.

It is hard to find a hotel in Delhi that ticks all the boxes. Aman New Delhi used to ... but has lot its charm of late. The Claridges doesn't try to be a 'destination' hotel but instead tries to provide great service in a clean modern environment.
The staff have been well trained and are efficient and helpful. The rooms are a little tired but spacious and clean with comfortable beds.
It isn't an outstanding hotel but does provide refuge from the chaos that is Delhi!
