“Toy Train to Shimla”
Reviewed 8 March 2012

Kalka is a junction town. There are a number of traveller hotels if you need a one night stop over, but the Windsmoor in Parwanoo may be a better option. The Toy train is amazing and worth the 5 hour or so journey. The engineering and scenery are fantastic. Booking on the train through the Indian Railway site or Cleartip can be frustrating as it seems that tickets are only available on the internet a month or so before the travel date. A must do in India!

“Journey by Toy train”
Reviewed 5 March 2012

Any one visiting Shimla must travel by the heritage toy train to feel the power of nature to rejuvenate ourselves. The spiral track with nature all around climbing on the mountains and within the tunnels can not be explained in the words. It is to experience only.

“An odd but interesting experience”
Reviewed 1 March 2012

I am afraid of heights and this little ancient heritage train chugged for six hours thousands of feet in the air along harrowing precipices and cliffs. I am sure for those who enjoy heights more it would be great. The train is old and the two seats really only fit one person and not much room for luggage - you are really packed in. There are many stops and it is slow but you can get tea and snacks at these stops. The washrooms are unusable so keep this in mind. For those who enjoy mountain travel it does provide spectacular views and it is probably the safest way (other than air) up into the Himalayas

“Great Trip!!”
Reviewed 22 February 2012

This was a great experience. The views are endless and it's such a calm and peaceful way to get to Shimla. But it does become extremely tiresome in the end as the coaches aren't that comfortable and the train goes at a very slow pace, but great experience none the less!
