Description: Chetana Vegetarian Restaurant (established 1946) is a historical landmark in the heart of the business district of Kala Ghoda. Its origins lie in a cultural cafe that was once the cultural hub in South Mumbai which prided a Chess Club as a part of its culture. Unusually, inside the restaurant is a bookshop specializing in Indian Philosophy (Chetana Book Center). Beside is a boutique specializing in Indian handloom garments (Chetana Craft Center). The founder philosopher/businessman of the establishment, Sudhakar Dixit, is the editor of an influential spiritual classic, "I Am That" (the teachings of a contemporary sage - Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj). His daughter, Chhaya Arya, herself an artist continues the tradition of Chetana.

We went there for lunch recommended by a local. Really good thali!!
Got two different styles (expensive for Indian prices / 500-600 rps) and soooo tasty. Happy to have it as our first thali in India
It is only 5 minutes from Gateway india and taj mahal hotel, if you have time go!

In Mumbai with my daughter for three nights and this restaurant was recommended by both our guide and TA. The thali was delicious and plentiful with many opportunities to refill your plate. Thali for two with drinks came to less than £10

As mentioned in the title of the review- "Been here for ages- so now you must be there to enjoy their spread" this joint has been there for a long long time. Known for their vegetarian dishes people come from far and beyond. I love their winter special undhyu plus their chaat, jalebis etc. During the Kala Ghoda Festival [annually in Feb] they place their stall where you can enjoy all their delicious dishes.

We travelled in India for 4 weeks and had our first taste of Indian food at Chetanas. After eating our way around India I rate Chetanas as one of the best tasting meals in the country. Friendly service. Didn't like the complimentary buttermilk!
