This place has the most amazing chicken cheese omelette that I have ever had. And the bun maska (butter) is very soft, once you have their butter coated bread your lips automatically get moisturized ... Jokes apart their chicken cutlets are also something to try..

Being in Mumbai for more than a couple of decades this small eatery was like finding a gemstone and lot of nostalgic childhood

You will instantly love this place for its simplicity and no nonsense food affair

I was simply delighted by the first bite of the keema dipped pav, the best I had iy in years in Mumbai.

Equally the Berry embedded Bun maska along with Irani Chai is a best combination along with your friends

Childhood delights like Phantom Cigarettes Mints, Kissme Toffee , Ice cream Soda will trigger memory time bombs which would set you all in smile

Do visit this place in Mahim, Mumbai

Every city’s history & geography is dotted with some iconic historic places. Their contribution to the city’s ethos is so immense that they form a part of any conversation or become a referral point whenever there is a mention of that City.

Mumbai has its fair share of such iconic places but Irani Café or Irani restaurants have a special place in the hearts of Mumbaikar’s especially the older generation; the one’s who are 40 years & above. There wouldn’t be a single person in that age group who hasn’t been to the legendary Irani restaurant. At a time when entertainment was restricted to a few activities, these places provided a cheaper source of entertainment to spend some good time with friends over endless yakking.

Café Irani Chaii is probably the first Irani Café to open shutters in atleast the last 30 years of what I have seen in Mumbai; at a time when I have seen & heard many close down business for varied reasons.

The ambiance has been replicated from the standard that Irani Café’s were known for. A lot of woodwork is used in the entire Café from the furniture to the wall cladding to the ceiling. They have put up a lot of mirrors along the walls on either side. The electrical switches & switch boards used are the vintage types. They have even put up a board which lists out the things / activities you cannot do sitting there. The cash counter is also typically designed; with the huge glass jars and their lids, the egg tray on the counter and the old style telephone instruments.

The menu card has a plenty for the non-vegetarians and only 3 main course items for the vegetarians like me except the Bun Maska & its variants.

I have tried all the vegetarian options and have fallen in love with the Vegetable Dhansak. The thick concoction of multiple lentils is blended into a thick puree with some vegetables. The flavours of the Dhansak were very vibrant and lively. My assumption was that Parsi / Irani cuisine is bland or enriched with lot of dry fruits etc but this Dhansak put all my assumptions to rest. The spice levels of the Dhansak made me reach for the glass of water. It was served with brown rice which was tossed with some Jeera and fried onions.

I tried the Paneer Bhurji as well. It was slightly oily and had a hint of sourness to it. It was well tossed with a generous amount of tomatoes, onions and green chilies.

There is nothing more that I should be saying about the Irani Chai that they serve; it is legendary and the taste is sustained / maintained over a period of time. Also had the Sulemani Chai which is nothing but black tea served with a slice of lemon.

Irani restaurants are a slice of the city’s history. They were probably the place where many a love stories would have blossomed, many business proposals would have fructified and where many friends have had a good time over endless cups of Irani chai. It is heartening to see the efforts of @Dr. Mansoor Showghi Yezdi who has given the new generation a chance to experience what their parents & grandparents did; the enigma called IRANI CAFÉ.
