“Clean budget hotel, good location, poor communication on prices”
Reviewed 26 April 2012

We arrived around 6am after an overnight train journey having booked the room in advance. They were supposed to pick us up from the train station but didn't turn up. When we arrived reception told us we needed to phone the mobile number for the pick up, however when we booked they didn't tell us this, or give us a mobile number to call! The room with the rate we were quoted was then not available, only a more expensive room. We were informed we would need to pay for for the night before we arrived aswell as the night we were staying if we wanted to use it from 6am. We had asked all of these questions over the phone before we reserved the room and the information was very different, we were told the room would be available to use from when we arrived and we only pay for the night we were staying overnight. We eventually agreed to discuss this with the manager at a more friendly hour. After several discussions with the manager we got a room at the pre arranged price for only the nights we stayed, but it wasn't a very pleasant experience.
Aside from the above, the room was very nice, we went for a non AC option and it wasn't too stuffy. The hotel is in a nice quiet side street, and there are good communal areas to sit and eat breakfast outside. If there hadn't been the issues with the room rate and station pick up I would have rated the hotel much more highly.

We booked and confirmed over the phone for AC Room as they said there is no need of email confirmation. After arriving at the hotel, they told us room tariff which are far different as they told us on phone (Increased). The management refused to give us our agreed room price. The room was okay and clean. Everything is ok except the room tariff. They do not honour reservations and offer any room as per there availability and they charge high amount. Mostly you find foreign in this hotel.

The hotel is clean and tidy. We stayed in two non A/C rooms, which was fine as there was a ceiling fan and screened windows. Some room can let a cool breeze through in the evening. Wi-fi is free but available in the main sitting area only. (If it's not working, they usually just had to turn it on. All you have to do is ask.) The rooms had television with several channels which was perfect to chill in front of during the hottest part of the day.

The Singh brothers (owners/managers) were extremely helpful to us when my boyfriend needed to get to a dentist. They let us use the phone to call our insurance company back home and asked around for a good quality dentist that was open on a Sunday.

The only downside was the food. The snack and breakfast options were well done, but the same could not be said about the dinners. As anywhere in our travels in India, the food is being made fresh, so don't wait until you're starving to order as it can take up to an hour for you food to be prepped and brought up to your sitting area. If your order doesn't arrive after that, you may need to ask about it.

Free pick up from the bus and train station is available if you give them a call when you arrive. They also dropped us off at the train station for free when we left.

Hotel Karni Niwas has good-value-for-money rooms at different price levels, depending on what exactly you are looking for (with or without A/C, balcony, etc). Our room was spacious and very clean (including the bed sheets and the bath room). They may show you a different room than the one you had originally reserved, so make sure to ask about the price of the room you are led to in order to avoid possible misunderstandings, and insist on the price you had agreed on over email, if necessary.

Towels, soap and toilet paper are available, however you may have to ask for it at the reception. Don't worry though, they are glad to give it to you.

There is free WiFi in the common areas of the hotel (not in the rooms, at least not the one we were in), however the connection was on and off. Every time we mentioned it to the management, however, they managed to make it work again somehow.

There is also free pick-up at the train station and they even offered to drop us off again for free after our stay, which was a big plus!

The location is ok, pretty close to the walls of the Old City and the main road where there is some shopping and a couple of good restaurants. In the evenings, however, we were glad to eat at the hotel, since there is not much going in its direct surroundings. Luckily enough, the food they provide was very tasty.

The hotel also offers good (machine washed) laundry service at affordable cost.

Avoid taking the rickshaw that is stationed just outside the hotel entrance; we found a rickshaw that would take us to Amber Fort for half the price he was asking for.

Room Tip: Have a look at different rooms and make sure to agree on the price beforehand.

We stayed here for three nights during the elephant festival and holi and really felt like this hotel saved us. Jaipur itself is a stressful place to walk around in, and having Karni Niwas and the wonderful owner to go back to made our experience a good one. The location is fine although it's a good distance from the Pink City, but it's down an alley so it was very quiet at night. The owner was so helpful and friendly. He has tuktuk drivers waiting outside the hotel to bring you on trips around the city to see the Amber Fort, Monkey Temple, etc (these two sights were the best part of our visit to Jaipur) for a great price. He also let us shower after Holi before leaving for our night train to Jaisalmer. The rooms are really nice, and the best part is ordering breakfast and having it delivered to the patio outside your room where you eat in the sunlight enjoying the peace before going out into the hectic city. The hotel is a perfect place to relax in comfort. I would highly suggest it to anyone travelling to Jaipur.

We stayed here for two nights after one night in the terrible hotel next door. It had scrupulously clean spacious rooms with outside seating areas and a roof terrace. The staff were friendly and helpful and the manager kept our bags safe all day after we checked out before giving us a free lift to the train station.

There's free wifi and although there's limited access at the back of the building there's plenty of seating available with good signal strength. There are also two computer terminals available for use next to reception.

There are phones in each room to order room service which you can enjoy on the balcony outside.

Accommodation in Jaipur isn't cheap overall but this was significantly better value than the other two hotels we viewed in the locality, I would definitely stay here again.

Beware of the monkeys on the roof top though....

We were lucky enought to be in Jaipur during the kite festival. We loved the rooftops and the wonderful hangout spot! We had a blast trying to fly kites and seeing the city from above. Awesome shower too with plenty of hot water. This is not by any means a luxury hotel but for the price we thought it was a good value. Don't be sketched out by the location, and make sure to go to the gem market (down a funny little alley) about ten minutes away. Thanks for the stay Karni Niwas!
