“value for your rupees”

Stayed twice at this well located guest house close to Chennai Egmore station.Situated in its own grounds it is away from the worst of the city noise and pollution.Good buffet breakfast included in the price (don't forget to collect your daily breakfast authorisation ticket and sign 3 times... Indian burocracy lives on)What set it apart was the helpfulness, kindnessand efficency of the reception staff.Overall great value for money.

I would most definitely recommend staying at the YWCA - especially if you're traveling alone. The accommodations were basic, but clean, comfortable, and affordable. The rooms were well appointed with a clean bed, night stand, phone, desk, two chairs, closet, luggage rack, and bathroom (Western style toilet with toilet paper, soap, and 2 towels). I elected for an A/C room which was about 1200 rupees per night, not including taxes/fees. This included an "okay" free breakfast buffet, offering both Indian and basic Western selections. The staff at the YWCA, including the desk, housekeeping, dining, and security - were professional, friendly, and always helpful. The YWCA grounds are beautiful - and offer a bit of refugee in a busy city.

However, a few pieces of advice:
(1) Request a room that is NOT facing the road. My room faced the road and even with the windows closed and the A/C on the traffic noise was overwhelming. Around 11 pm every night the long-haul trucks would begin going by and their engine noise was deafening - literally hurt my ears and was nearly constant for 2-3 hours every night. I should have requested a room change, but didn't want to be a bother.

(2) When arranging for a Taxi from the YWCA to the airport arrange for it yourself and REQUEST that the distance be metered, know the pricing in advance, and get a receipt. When I asked the front desk staff about the pricing they quoted me 500 rupees for a non-A/C taxi and 600 rupees for a taxi with A/C. However, I had a local person arrange for a Fasttrack taxi for me and it was exactly 20 KM to the airport - for a charge of a flat 300 rupees in a taxi WITH A/C. That is HALF the price the front desk quoted me. If you're feeling generous, give the taxi driver some of the difference in what you saved (i.e. up to 300 rupees!) After all, they are the hard-working individual who gave you a ride to the airport in the middle of the night. However, a 50 - 100 rupee tip is more than sufficient.

(3) I also recommend walking around the corner and buying your bottled water from Spencer - it's about 1/2 the price that they offer it at the YWCA - typical. There are also several nearby restaurants where you can get a FABULOUS meal for 1/2 the price that lunch or dinner would cost you at the YWCA. The YWCA has okay food, but it gets boring after a couple of meals. Devontae and Blue Diamond are two great places that come to mind. But, there are many others - just ask at the front desk.

(4) Avoid the rickshaw drivers who stand outside the gates of the YWCA - their price is ALWAYS double to triple (or more) what it should be. Ask the staff at the front desk about what your trip should cost and then when you walk out of the YWCA gates take a right and walk to the first street... walk about 10 feet down the first street and flag down a rickshaw - you'll get a WAY better price.

Room Tip: AWAY from the street - trust me!

Although the entrance of the hotel seemed not very clear arriving in the middle of the night, the staff was friendly. The room was basi but clean towels were given. Breakfast was basic 'western' but ok.

The YWCA is a budget guest house with large clean, basic rooms offering all the essentials at a very reasonable price. It is set in a leafy compound on the busy Poonamallee High Road, so you can hear the birdsong even though the traffic roars by! (Ask if they have a room away from the road).

The reception desk is open 24 hours a day - great for late arrivals at Chennai Airport - and all the staff were very friendly and helpful, and able to offer suggestions about where to go and how to get there. The breakfast buffet offered a choice of Indian or western food and was included in the price.

Income from the guest house supports a variety of very worthwhile projects on the campus, including an orphanage, educational projects, support for battered wives, a home for elderly widows - nineteen projects in all; so by staying here, you also help to support their important work with and for local women.

I was delighted by the friendliness of the staff, the good food priced fairly low and the comfortable accommodation. If you are looking for a change from the impersonal modern hotel, stay here and accept the homeliness that comes with a neat and comfortable, but basic room. You feel you are in India and not just any International hotel! There is a large pond (that could do with some attention), and still a good many trees around which add to the quietness and calm that contrast sharply with the noise and traffic outside. The 24 hour check in is a boon and the desk staff, both male and female showed us consideration and friendliness throughout our week long stay.

Just stayed a day but was pleased. The front desk helped with everything I needed. Brought water to my room, called a cab, answered my many questions cheerfully. Buffet was actually pretty good... simple. The place felt very safe to me and had some nice areas to walk within the compound. I had previously stayed at a simple hotel for around the same price which may have been a little nicer but I liked the hostel feel of this place better. Nice to be around other travelers and fewer business people.

It is an ideal place for Indians returning home. The delux rroms (about Rs1800 or USD40) are clean and meets the need. There is an Indian Breakfast on the house. You can also pre-order for lunch and dinner buffet (about Rs 150 each) - which are almost like home made food. The staff in the restaurant are decent folks. No frills , no fancies - decent place nevertheless!
