I stayed here after a bad experience at Sunflower guesthouse, happy to get a good place closer to New Market. The place was relatively quiet at night, considering it is right on Sudder Street, except for a loud generator of the new hotel next door. The rooms are huge, allmost too big, but okay for a few nights. I had to leave after a few days, because the owner had promised my room to someone else who came for a long stay. This is not really a guest house, it feels more like a homestay. I hope the house is not going to be renovated soon, which would certainly hike the prices.

Let's start by saying that Kolkata is a very run-down city overall, with hundreds of fine old buildings in advanced states of decrepitude. The city's Communist government ties everything up in red tape (no pun intended) and makes it hard for new hotels to get permits. That means that many dingy old places remain in business, charging over-the-odds prices for terrible rooms. So coming from elsewhere in India, you had better increase your budget for a room, or else lower your expectations. Based on these lowered expectations, Tourist Inn is decent overall.

It costs 1700 rupees for a basic room, but it is a very big, airy room with lots of natural light. This puts it a cut above many of the dark, gloomy dives on Sudder Street. It also has cable TV, tea and coffee facilities and hot water (though you do have to pour it over your head out of a bucket.) It is also set in a colonial building with a wooden staircase, 100 year old masonry and high ceilings, which creates a bit of atmosphere. You could do worse.

This is a family run homely place for budget travelers. Its clean very central and pocket friendly. They have nice air conditioned rooms with tea and coffee / kettle attached bathroom. Its a old colonial British building almost heritage so rooms are rather large and bathrooms are huge with hot water. Its 3 minutes walk to New market , 10 minutes walk to happening park street with all the restaurants and night clubs with bars.
All tourist attractions are within 5 kilometers.
Families can stay here with kids extra bedding is provided.
Remember this is a a guest house and not a hotel. If you are looking for a good hotel there are many in this area but may be twice or three times the rates.

Room tip: Anything on ground or first floor away from the road is OK. No lift so if elderly or with children take ground floor. Many restaurants and convenience stores within few meters is an advantage.

I arrived with some friend in Kolkata and after few fully booked hotel, we stopped at this one.
It had kind of positive comment on lonely planet. But the reality was much more different.
the place was super dirty, toilet broken and the mattress was packed with bedbugs....I left the next day!! Terrible and dirty place, avoid if you can.

I went there at the end of March. My company booked three rooms.Mine was the biggest one, a giant room at the 3rd floor, for which i paid 1500 roupies. I liked the simple but atmospheric furnitures-overall there was an amiable nostalgic atmosphere in the place.
However, after a small siesta, i woke up with 5-6 huge bites, which at first i mistook for mosquito bites. When i returned in the roomed in the afternoon, i killed more 5-6 bedbugs on my bed. After my complaints, they moved us to an equally sizeable room at the ground level, which supposedly was clean. I had a nightmarish night there too, killing almost 10 more bedbugs on my bed! My friend who slept on a 200 roupies single room had the same experience. In any case, although bedbugs in Sadder str. are common in most places, i find it ridiculous to sleep with bedbugs in a room that costs 1500 roupies. Obviously i left early in the morning.
I hope they ll do st for that soon, as the place is generally nice, and the owner i have to admit that he is one of the most kind and polite persons i ve spoken to in India.
