“Very small rooms & noisy guests”
Reviewed 3 January 2012

Chalston has a great location if you dont want to go far to get to a beach but other than that i cant really find much to praise it about. The rooms are the smallest i have ever seen in Goa (we have stayed in many different hotels), they were so small that there isnt even enough space for a proper wardrobe. 2 people cant pass each other when walking around the foot of the bed, it is tiny. The wardrobe was of open bamboo design right beside the door allowing eveyone walking in a central corridor able to see not just in your room but see all your possesions. The balcony was barely able to take 2 chairs with the large AC unit taking most of the space. One good point of the room was it had its own safe however we had to have it repaired twice during the first week. The rooms do have satilite TV however unless you speak an indian dialect you will be limited to 3 or 4 channels which vary from day to day depending on the reception which changes regularly so dont even try to watch a film as you wont get to see the end of it. The staff in general were very friendly but not trained to the same standard as many other resorts in the area. They mainly looked downtrodden but i think this was more to do with the attitude of many of the guests and the management couldnt care less attitude. Other than the beach everything is an extra including pool table (£1 per 30 mins), table tennis, yoga, etc, etc We had a good 15 minute walk to get to into calangute and not the 5 minutes quoted in some reviews. Breakfast every morning was OK but far from great. Every morning there was eggs of one style, bread rolls and a veg dish however over the 2 weeks there were only 5 egg dishes of which 4 highly spiced with chillies, fine for local tastes but not for European pallets. All the veg dishes would easily remove your tastebuds for the day!! We could order off the menu which was good but this was extra.

The hotel was extremely noisy at night (every night) right through till 2-3am with guests running up and down the central corridor screaming and laughing. The majority of the guests were either Indian or Russian who didnt respect that there were other guests in the hotel.

The pool 'bar' had an extreemly limited service with only fruit juices, 2 x beer, 3/4 spirits & some crisps. The only food at the pool bar was whatever dessert cakes that were left over from the night before. The pool was reasonably quiet during the day however when the Indian guests returned mid afternoon it turned wild with them diving in and soaking everything in the vicinity. Despite all the signs not once did the staff ask them to calm down and behave like adults.

Overall the hotel is very disappointing for what we paid for the accomodation compared to those that have stayed in other hotels in Goa. The Chalston is rated as a 3* + but i wouldnt even give it 2* when i compare it to the other 2 & 3* hotels we have stayed in around Goa.

We could just have been unlucky with the other guests who chose to stay at the hotel when we were there however with the rooms being so small we wont be returning to this resort again.

Room Tip: Book a different hotel

went to the Chalston after going through the reviews on tripadvisor and have to admit that it was the right choice. Spent 2 nights as i did not have much time off. Bang on the beach and best part is that the beach in front of the Chalston is almost empty most of the time. Rooms are value for money. The resort has a wonderful and a huge garden. Loved the food at the restaurant. Dinners at the restaurant are accompanied by live shows and was lucky to watch a indian classical dance & music show. Huge parking space and very helpful staff specially at the reception and the restaurant. Will definitely be back soon.

Room Tip: go for the sea facing rooms which are really huge specially if you are with kids.

Firstly , kudos to the location of the hotel. Right on the beach. It is located closer to the Calngute beach, however it feels like a private beach. Sun -beds on the beach. The restaurant serves good food. Try vegetarian and non veg items both. The restaurant gives a very cozy feeling. We went to this place just before Christmas and we could feel the mood. They have different performances on different days. Live Music. Rajasthani folk dance etc...
The rooms are very good. Properly maintained and with all available basic amenities. Each room has a distinct view. We stayed in a pool facing room.
The swimming pool is very clean and well maintained. Safe for children and adults. The staff is very friendly and has an edge in their service. Breafast is complimentary with room price. Although breakfast was just about Ok.
We stayed in a standard room -AC and paid 2300 per night. It is really worth it.
You can spend quality time in the resort and enjoy the beauty of the place.

Room Tip: Swimming costume mandatory in the pool. Breakfast is about average. Night time the road to the res...

The food is exceptional and the retuanrant has live porgamgs every evening. Looks like a reasonable hotel due to ratse but is an expectional hotel. this really is the perfect hotel if you want to be centrally located in calangute. its walking distance to the main strip of calangute, and did i mention it's on the beach!! literally!!
(see pictures) its beautifully located right on the beach, and as you walk up and down the beach you woundnt find another hotel like it. we enjoyed many breakfasts watching the waves break onto the shores and many evening watching the beautifull sunsets.

Our room was as it was discribed - ''basic'', we booked pretty late so had to settle for a basic room (S4). the room was on the smaller side but in good condition and clean. it came with, as do all, with a small balcony, our view wasnt one of the best-facing farming feilds-but it did come in handy when drying out wet towels and beach wear.
the bathroom, again basic but ok i guess, didnt like how the shower was next to the toilet but you get used to it. another thing we had to get used to was the quality of the shower, had literally no power, water was almost just dripping on you, but like as i said, you get used to it.
but dont let this put you off as im sure not all rooms were like this. we thourougly enjoyed our stay here, the staff were all very helfull and very attentive to your needs.

Dislikes :
poor shower / had to ask for rooms to be cleaned / breakfast-a little more variety would have been nice but what was offered was of good quality (fresh buns, omellete, a veg dish, tea and coffee. large breakfast menu is available at very reasonable prices)

Likes :
Location of hotel-i just cant stress this enough!! the overall friendliness of staff / beautifull gardens, always being trimmed, watered and well maintained / the cleansleness of pool (small but well maintained) / quality of food and very reasonalble prices......im sure there were plenty more but cant think right now.

usefull tips/advice :
- from airport to hotel, from 900-1000 rupees (nite rate) 700-900 (day rate)
takes roughly about an hour.
- most places offer great exchange rate with no commisson, we got 80rupees per £.
- try to use local buses to get to various points of inetersts as they are SO cheap and you
get to see more of the local scenry' i.e : paid 300 rupees each way to Panjim via
taxi, took the bus another day for 60 rupees!!! for both of us!!
- get used to everyone coming up to you on the beach offering all kinds of services, selling
clothes, offering water sports, tattooist etc... just politely say no thanks but dont ignore as
they do take offence to that.
- calangute beach it filled with locals and tourists, and in very poor conditons, walk further
down to Baga beach where its alot lot cleaner and not so crowded.

We returrning next december will most definately be staying here again.
Thank you all at the Chalston. x

Have stayed at this propery couple of times and recommended to my friends who in turn stayed at this property. Honestly, I would have rated it 5 star but the owner (Ms. Maria and her husband) and hotel staff are not friendly or welcome to we Indians. Considering the fact the owner is Indian. They are more than welcome to Swedish or scandanavian people.

However, the hotel is located bang on the beach with excellent location and rooms at one's disposal. They have villa which are really good and it's great when a couple of families or friends travel together. The hotel premises is very clean and maintained.

They a small pool with a very nice beach shack. The best part of the beach shack, it is only meant for the people who are staying at their property and not to any outsiders. For young little kids they have huge area of manicured garden. The hotel can double up as a destination wedding place as it has all small little things which can make the place a memorable place.

The food at the hotel is average but they serve some awesome apple pie, musse etc. They have live music, dance at the shack in the evening. Overall is good option to stay when you have limited budget. The market, pub etc. are stone throw away from the hotel.

Room Tip: Choose the hotel rooms facing the swimming pool or the beach.

This was my second visit to Chalston Resort and would always stay here whenever I visit Goa again. I travel to goa atleast twice a year and have tried various hotels, resorts, and B&B stays. I have been in this resort for trips of 2 days and 5 days. The first trip was planned for 3 days and we ended up extending it to 5 days last November. The room rates offered are great considering the location.

Pros:
- Located in between Baga and Calangute beach.
- There is a restaurant attached to the resort that opens right on the beach.
- You can have your meals witha beach view without leaving your hotel.
- The staff is helpful and courteous.
- The check-in is quick and reception is helpful.
- Booking querries are answered promptly throught email or phone.
- Sea Food is great and breakfast is decent.
- Rooms are well maintained.
- Every room has a small but nice balcony.
- The swimming pool is small but well maintained.

Cons:
- No in room dining. This is probably the only thing I missed here.
- Look out for noisy neighbours, because the construction somehow doesn't block all the noise.

I would suggest you book a room not facing the pool, else you would be disturbed by the swimmers noise all day long. I have been here with my better half, friends, and by end of this year I plan to take a trip with my family here.
