Chalston has a great location if you dont want to go far to get to a beach but other than that i cant really find much to praise it about. The rooms are the smallest i have ever seen in Goa (we have stayed in many different hotels), they were so small that there isnt even enough space for a proper wardrobe. 2 people cant pass each other when walking around the foot of the bed, it is tiny. The wardrobe was of open bamboo design right beside the door allowing eveyone walking in a central corridor able to see not just in your room but see all your possesions. The balcony was barely able to take 2 chairs with the large AC unit taking most of the space. One good point of the room was it had its own safe however we had to have it repaired twice during the first week. The rooms do have satilite TV however unless you speak an indian dialect you will be limited to 3 or 4 channels which vary from day to day depending on the reception which changes regularly so dont even try to watch a film as you wont get to see the end of it. The staff in general were very friendly but not trained to the same standard as many other resorts in the area. They mainly looked downtrodden but i think this was more to do with the attitude of many of the guests and the management couldnt care less attitude. Other than the beach everything is an extra including pool table (£1 per 30 mins), table tennis, yoga, etc, etc We had a good 15 minute walk to get to into calangute and not the 5 minutes quoted in some reviews. Breakfast every morning was OK but far from great. Every morning there was eggs of one style, bread rolls and a veg dish however over the 2 weeks there were only 5 egg dishes of which 4 highly spiced with chillies, fine for local tastes but not for European pallets. All the veg dishes would easily remove your tastebuds for the day!! We could order off the menu which was good but this was extra.
The hotel was extremely noisy at night (every night) right through till 2-3am with guests running up and down the central corridor screaming and laughing. The majority of the guests were either Indian or Russian who didnt respect that there were other guests in the hotel.
The pool 'bar' had an extreemly limited service with only fruit juices, 2 x beer, 3/4 spirits & some crisps. The only food at the pool bar was whatever dessert cakes that were left over from the night before. The pool was reasonably quiet during the day however when the Indian guests returned mid afternoon it turned wild with them diving in and soaking everything in the vicinity. Despite all the signs not once did the staff ask them to calm down and behave like adults.
Overall the hotel is very disappointing for what we paid for the accomodation compared to those that have stayed in other hotels in Goa. The Chalston is rated as a 3* + but i wouldnt even give it 2* when i compare it to the other 2 & 3* hotels we have stayed in around Goa.
We could just have been unlucky with the other guests who chose to stay at the hotel when we were there however with the rooms being so small we wont be returning to this resort again.
