The building has a lot of history, there is life history in the corridor towards the toilets, as you go in, on the right.
The hotel has a fabulous garden and sits in a sizeable ground.
The area around the hotel is known as the French concession, which is very interesting to explore.
The rooms are very comfortable and spacious although nothing special.
The Sky Bar is worth checking out as it provides a great view of the city, especially at night, but it doesn't face the Bund skyline, which when you read the history you'll know why.
There is a train station at the end of the block and access to the main shopping within 3mins walk of the hotel.
We walked down to the Bund from the hotel, although not close it doesn't take long especially when looking at other things on the way.
Would stay here again.

I lived on this hotel for business. The room was nice, the bathroom was fine and the view was great. Breakfast was ok, lots of options. Excercise area was fine with hand weights, a few tread mills + rowing machine and a bike.
Staff was friendly.

Dear Lise P,

Thank you for choosing Okura Garden Hotel(shanghai), your evaluation and advice are very important to our hotel.
Our location was really good in town. It is a historic hotel located within its own garden on a major tree-lined street, near premium shopping, subway, restaurants. Well-run. Quiet, comfortable room. Hope to see you soon in the future.

Wow...what a lovely hotel. It's a glimpse into Shanghai's colonial past and the common area on the ground floor are really spectacular. Plus, in this dense past of town, it has a lovely sweep of gardens offering a cool retreat from the city heat. Rooms are well appointed with a really lovely bed; firm, but to my liking. The desk staff were very helpful and all had good English. I could never get the television to work (I can be pretty stupid with remote controls, so that's more likely my fault than the hotel's!), plus the kettle seemed especially complicated too. It's very well positioned, close to a metro station and next to lots of shops, bars and restaurants. The breakfast buffet was especially good. My advice, get up early if you can and walk the 10 or 15 mins to Fuxing Park which is nearby. It's an amazing space and full of fascinating goings on early in the morning. Then amble back through the tree lined avenues for a lovely big breakfast. Top shelf stuff.

Room Tip: The higher you go, the better the view.

I worked in Shanghai for four years in an office that looked directly at the Okura Garden Hotel, and in the years since have stayed there now and then when visiting Shanghai. So much has changed in Shanghai over the years, but the Okura is like an old reliable friend. Excellent service, huge spacious rooms, very clean and neat. Great wifi. So many good things about this hotel, including the very reasonable price. And just across the street is one of my favorite restaurants in the world, Di Shui Dong on Maoming Lu. Highly recommend this hotel.

Second time to stay and last. Arrived last evening from Guangzhou and tied and was told there was no rooms with double bed. All sold. So I said I will find new hotel and Manager appeared. Then he said he had a double bed room for 200 RMB extra per night. Strange when five minutes earlier they were all sold.
STOP THIS RIPOFF.
